Coolant temp - Comfort vs Sport

The coolant temp read-out on my Dash Command app drops some 20 plus degrees when switching from Comfort to Sport / Sport +.
Is that covered in the OM somewhere ?

The car has a more aggressive cooling program when not in Comfort mode.

I always keep the car in Comfort during engine warm up, and on the highway for higher engine temp efficiency.

I also always keep the car in Sport mode or higher for track in-lap’s and off track cool down driving.

It’s not in the manual, but there are several threads that discuss this with snips from BMW technical guides.

At what point do you switch to sport after warm up? When the gauge says OK or when it reaches the middle?

Once it says OK.

I’ve never seen the needle drop when switching to Sport once it says OK, but I’ve seen the needle drop from the middle on cooler days when switching to Sport.

I switch when it's in the middle as I want the car to get to temp as fast as possible.

You are a more patient man, than I. “OK” is good enough for me.

To be fair I put it in mdm mode so it's a little bit more fun and transmission is more responsive than comfort. (quick press dsc button on n55)

Now I think we’re confusing each other.

I stay in Comfort until the gauge says OK, so the car heats up as quickly as possible. Then, it’s no holds barred!

So when driving in MDM, I guess the car is using the less aggressive cooling program ?

Nope. All modes, except Comfort, use the more aggressive cooling mode.

Traction (MDM) mode uses Comfort steering and throttle responses, but more aggressive cooling and DSC slip settings. If you have a DCT, MDM mode will shift Comfort-style smooth, but faster and will hold gears longer.

Good info, thanks for sharing! Is the more aggressive cooling function also active in Traction off mode and DSC off mode?

When you guys say that the gauge reads "OK", do you mean the temperature bar gauge moves away from the far left reading? Or am I missing an actual "OK" indicator?

I can’t remember if it’s different in ‘18’s, but mine will say COLD then OK once it moves about 2/5 from far left.

Then, the needle will eventually reach the middle.

Seems like the car warms up faster in MDM than sport or sport+ but I don't have any hard evidence to support that.

I'm pretty sure MDM uses the non efficient cooling because mine always warms up to higher temp just as in comfort

In my F10 m5, the same happens when switching from comfort to Sport. I believe the fan is on all the time during Sport mode, which is why you see the increased drop in water/oil temperatures. In my M5 i'm also seeing ~20-30 degree drop in temps when using sport mode. (I have the electronic BMW performance steering wheel so I can monitor these temps very accurately - it's my business after all

This isn’t correct. I can’t track it down at the moment, but if you all do some searching you should be able to find threads with charts and whatnot that show all modes except for Comfort have a more aggressive cooling program.

Here is the factory description about engine cooling parameters in different modes.

I think that diagram is for the regular M235 N55. All Euro/US M2's have everything in that diagram plus an additional oil to air heat exchanger on the right not shown.
