Really tired of this not an M engine argument. The iconic M1 had an M88/1 engine. So the first and probably most expensive M car does not have an engine number starting with S.

It could sound like a moped (it doesn't) if that means I get to go fast, as oppose to sound fast but go as fast as the $2000 Honda |

Not that it particularly matters, but of course the M88 in the M1 wasn't an "S" designated engine because it would 8 years before BMW started designating BMW Motorsport road going engines with an "S" (when the S14 debuted).

Is that because the S55 has better cooling?

The N55 in the OG M2 has a few beefed up parts compared to the normal N55. The S55 has been reworked for Motorsport use. It is able to make much more horsepower with just a flash tune without any physical changes to the engine. The N55 on the other hand will need many physical upgrades to pump out a lot more power. If you don't plan on tuning then the N55 is a good motor out of the box. I had one in my M235i, it was plenty fast for street use.

Yep. Proves the point that not all real M cars have engines starting with S.

It's a lot more than that. It's a closed deck design, vs the open deck of the N55. The extra cooling and I don't mean just the extra radiators, but the intercooler too. The fact that it power doesn't drop off like a rock past 5000 rpm and so on. It's an engine made to be driven at high rpm for extended period of time. There is a reason a FBO N55 will make like 430hp whereas a S55 with just a flash tune will make 500. They simply aren't on the same planet, and it's not just the engine.

1 sec difference is not “another planet.” But keep trolling; your insecurity is palpable.

I was in Florida and saw an M2C going in the other direction. The driver got on it (something other M owners do when they see another M car I've noticed). I didn't like the sound. To be fair, he could have been running an aftermarket exhaust. I saw YouTube videos of aftermarket exhaust on M2's and haven't liked a lot of them, but that's just me. On the engine topic. One peculiar thing I've always wondered about is how BMW worded the engine cover. On the OG M2, it says powered by M, on the S55 it says M power. It's a weird play on words, maybe meaning the N55 in the OG M2 isn't exactly an M engine or it is sort of? LOL All in all, I don't care. This is a subject that goes on and on mainly in car forums. Whenever I try to explain the difference to regular people they have no clue and don't care. I didn't mean to start anything, but should have known better, LOL. |

It's almost as bad as trying to explain the evolution of Michelin's highest performance summer tire via the names they were given through the decades (and in the meantime Bridgestone has used RE-71 since the mid 1980s). The upcoming PS4S replacement is called the PS S 5, so naturally it will be referred to as the "PSS5" and who wouldn't think the "SS" meant Super Sport like the predecessor to the PS4S - the Pilot Super Sport or PSS? When in fact it means Pilot Sport Super 5. Sigh...

So the change was not because the OG was not an "M" car but because it didn't have the "Competition" moniker?
