BMW No Longer Charging for Apple CarPlay Subscription in US

MacRumors - BMW Will No Longer Charge Annual Carplay Fees

Original AutoCar Article

Interesting new development. They don't know what will happen to people who already paid for the lifetime (20 year) plan, or others who have already paid for the annual plan.

From the MacRumors article:

"According to a BMW spokesperson that spoke with British site AutoCar, BMW will now offer *CarPlay* for free for the lifetime of the car on all models that have the latest ConnectedDrive infotainment system installed.

Models that do not use the latest system, such as the i3 and the i8, will now require a one-time fee instead of the subscription access. Going forward, in vehicles with the new system, *CarPlay* will be available at no cost."

I'm not exactly sure what the "latest version of ConnectedDrive" means, so we will need to wait for more info from BMW.

-edit: it appears that Autocar specifically states that runout examples of the 2 and 4 series will still need to pay for a lifetime subscription . . .

Either way, it's about time they reversed this decision.

I'm loving my free CarPlay subscription so much that I never use it.

I use Android.

Just called BMW Connect and the representative had no idea what I was talking about. I was on hold and she came back, said her supervisor said it was false, and that they have no plans to make Apple CarPlay free at this point. So who knows what's going on at this point. lol

Sounds like this doesn't effect us. Should be for the next gen cars, which....yeah that kinda sucks.

"Specifically, this will apply to 2019 and 2020 model year cars and owners will no longer need to cough up $80 per year to use the popular infotainment technology. Apple has long said it does not charge automakers to include the feature in its vehicles, though it's unclear what kind of costs automakers may incur when making their own vehicle systems compatible. Whether other automakers cleverly hid these costs or not, BMW took a different route and was, since 2018, the only automaker to charge for the service."

Tried CarPlay, but as others found it intrusive and annoying. That said I'm interested in using Waze with CarPlay, but recall something about it not showing red light or speed cams via CarPlay. Can any of you Waze-CarPlay users chime in on that; does Waze work the same via CarPlay as on your phone or do some features not carry over?

Yep, use it all the time when I drive. With a radar detector it's a great anti-ticket set up.

I thought BMW didn't start charging this until model year 2019.

From what I remember, the 2019 M2 Comp was the first year the subscription was implemented. Prior to that, it was a $300 option.

Technically, we didn't have to pay the $300 option, so I would be fine with paying a one time fee for full access for life.

From CarandDriver: https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a3...-carplay-free/

"BMW told Car and Driver that the majority of owners with 2019 model cars are still within their one-year trials and will see the service renew automatically. Anyone who had a trial that expired should now see the service reappear. Anyone who paid for a subscription will be refunded. And finally, anyone who buys a new BMW from this day on won't have to worry—it's standard on all vehicles with navigation."

Laughable that anyone would have to pay for this "service", its software and should be baked into the cost of the car.

Wireless CarPlay also utilizes the vehicle's in-vehicle data steam in order to provide vehicle location information, speed, location (GPS), compass orientation, album art, software revisions, ect.

So there is an active cost to BMW to run CarPlay, however little it might be.

True, but you get my point.

Everything I've read said 2019 and newer vehicles. I haven't seen anything that said it was going to "free" on 2017's. Which is totally rude.

That sounds like a BMW thing to do; screw the early adopters

But hang in there, maybe it will eventually become active in earlier models. Nothing is set in stone just yet until we get the official word on how they plan to implement this change of service.

My Carplay was set to expire this month and when I checked last week it still showed the option for me to pay $300 to renew in the ConnectedDrive portal. I didn't pay it.

I just checked again today and it looks like BMW came through. Subscription shows as valid through 2038. Looks like it just takes some time to roll out to everyone.
