I know it sounds ridiculous, but hear me out. This all has to do with signaling. So, all animals use signaling as a means of conveying information about their fitness to others. Peacocks grow giant gaudy tails to signal to peahens, "Hey baby, I am so ideal a mate that I can afford to waste precious calories to grow this stupid tail that actually weighs me down and makes me susceptible to predation, but because my genes are so good, I can still outrun predators with this handicap." Gazelles stot - jump up and down in place and click their heels in the air - as lions approach closer and closer to signal, "Listen, you could come after me, but I am so fast I'll leave you in the dust. Now, if you do chase me, we'll both waste a bunch of precious calories. So, instead, let me sit here and stot in front of you to show you via this costly signal that I am the real deal, the Usain Bolt of gazelles, so you go find another weaker gazelle, who isn't fit enough to stot as you get closer and closer and closer, and we'll both save our precious calories." In the same way, we primates use EVERYTHING at our disposal to signal to others. Clothing, food choices, tattoos, hair style... cars. So, the vape bro's will get the carbon flow through wings on their M2's, because that's their way of signaling to the world that they're edgy and young and virile hooligans. But that s*** is basic signaling 101. Advanced signaling is what's called "counter-signaling." That's where you take incongruous fashion, positions, style, etc., that demonstrate to the audience that you are SO FIT, SO HIGH STATUS that the rules simply don't apply to you. Think Steve Jobs and his ridiculous black turtlenecks and jeans. I once attended an event and met the CEO of Sun Microsystems. Guy had a pony tail, and was wearing a white Hanes t-shirt, and jeans. Silicon Valley is littered with people counter-signaling - they have so much money and so much status, they can afford to drive a 1997 Honda Accord. My best friend, whose last bonus was $1.3M, drove a Chevy Sonic and I remember going out to the parking lot, seeing the piece of s*** he was driving and immediately thinking, "Goddamn! You are so high status you can drive that???" Think Warren Buffet and his ancient piece of crap cars. Counter-signaling is where it's at! If OP is over the age of 40, the flow through wing is an amazing counter-signal. Nobody is going to mistake him for a vape bro. Instead, the choice is so incongruous that instead the conclusion everyone will come to is, "Dayyyyum! That dude is so high status, the rules simply don't apply to him!" Also, it just looks awesome. |

I guess that's a matter of opinion on people should or will perceive it. I'm 32 and I personally find it looks too chintzy for my age bracket. I understand why BMW offers it and I don't knock them; if people are willing to buy it, they going to sell it. You can't argue with the Free Market. But like Barbara Reagan once said; "Just Say No." You can never really know what's in a person's heart but I try to read how people feel based on how I personally perceive a situation, then filter it though their lens. When I was in my early 20s, I saw a middle age man in my favorite car at time, a Lancer Evolution MR. Which coincidently had a large, phallic, wing and all I innocently kept thinking to myself is "Who's car is he driving" it looked so out of place for his assumed age. : So at this juncture, I wouldn't want to be that guy, putting around, confusing the masses. But if anyone else feel they can pull it off, I promise I won't judge, not to your face anyways |

Well.... the wing seems to work! I had the car for less than a week and got my first ticket yesterday..... cop just had to select my car out of 3 doing the same speed.... wing perhaps? 140 kms/Hour in a 100 if you're curious. (He did drop it to 20 over though)
SUCKS!

Here is the car my local dealer has on sale. 2019 DCT, they are asking 83k for it... but I'm sure they can go lower. They say it has 18k worth of parts on it, but the wheels don't really count in my opinion since the stock 788's are not sold with the car.
https://www.autotrader.ca/a/bmw/m/mo...200C4&sprx=100 Aside from it being white, looks like the same spec as you!

Parts carefully selected and marketed to that dude who's going through his midlife crisis but can't exactly swing for a Porsche..
Which other grown-ass adult in that pay-grade would it appeal to and why else would anyone need a wing that's larger than their self-esteem... |

OP,
Having this week been to the unexpected funeral of a car-nut work colleague (heart attack at 55). I would say it looks great, Enjoy it while you can and stick two fingers up to anyone who says otherwise. Amen. |

The other thing is that my invoice showed none of the carbon or the 763s, it has 788s on it. Proving they were free, or corporate donated.

I don't get why people say "boy racer" like that is a bad thing... be fun and wild, it's a sports car! Who cares what other people think. Making safe and subtle choices because you're worried about judgement is so lame. Nothing wrong with bringing that inner child out and realizing life is meant to be enjoyed. I plan to put a big ass wing on mine

The car looks the part and just performs as you wanted it to do. Really happy ! All the carbon parts and the 763s just fit with the wing and stance. I think I'll keep it now.

It’s not any different than a GT3 wing. It’s a high quality factory made piece of kit and certainly not a rice burner wing. A Porsche isn’t any different than a BMW in its implementation and quality of the part so if you like the look then go for it.
I can’t believe the new M8 doesn’t have a ALMS type wing to give it a more exotic look. Last edited by MystroX5; 12-07-2019 at 08:51 PM.. |
