Another wheel hop thread...

I'm losing my mind over this...
Some people report no wheel hop,
I get it for days 1st and 2nd gear depending on conditions.
6 speed manual,
stock Pilot SS tires I've tried everything from 38 psi down to 32 psi.
It's just bad.
Has anyone found a solution. I can't run a small wheel due to the rear brake clearance.
I've seen some people mention the diff mounts.
I'd love to get this sorted once and for all.

Were you not getting enough traction with previous threads?

Never made it. Just a bunch of people saying their car doesnt do it and others saying theirs does. No solutions.

Well, the cause is either a problem with the transmission (or, maybe the rear suspension), or a loose nut behind the wheel.

If you're experiencing this effect anywhere other than at the drag strip, best take it to BMW and get it checked.

My clutch (6mt) was sticking leading to poor shifting (the dealership diagnosed this - I just mentioned on booking in that it was reluctant to go into gear), so it's possible.

You could get some kind of hop on a cold day and/or wet asphalt with everything in perfect order. In that case it may rather be the traction control trying to figure out what's going on rather than true wheel hop. Turn off traction and see if that helps. Wheel hop is something that happens regardless of the traction settings. If it goes away or improves with the traction control off, wheels just spinning/skipping instead (no hopping), it's traction control rather than wheel hop.

If it really is wheel hop take the car to the service and have the rear axle control arms bushings checked and replaced if necessary first. Also, check the differential mounts, if the above fails.

True wheel hop is weak bushings vs grippy tires which results dynamic alignment changes and loss&gain of traction cycles that feel like wheels skipping and hopping, gets worse the grippier the tires, goes away with crappy (e.g., winter) tires.

ps: might want to check the alignment, too. certainly, get alignment done if bushings are replaced.

I mean it's been doing it since my 1200 break in right when I was able to gun it, just hops and hops. I'm in florida. not really such a thing as a cold day until just about now.
I keep dropping my PSI I think an adjusted alignment will help and be cheap. Luckily I work at the dealer. I don't want to bring it in unless I KNOW there's a problem.

I bought my car used with 9400 miles on it, but the dealer had replaced the tires (stock Conti's) and had the alignment checked before I picked it up, so all that was good. At first the car would hop real bad on uneven surfaces, or if the ground was wet, or just pulling out of the car wash. Now, about 1500 miles later (almost all highway), it breaks away very smoothly. I think it's a bit of tire wear, and the colder temps, but others report it's worse when cold.

All I know is that I'm glad mine *seems* to be gone.
