So the weather turned early this year. It got cool and rainy mid September. I was hoping to get 1 or 2 more track days in, but too late.

So is it too early to plan next year already? I say not.

Ideally I would like to get 4 days at the Ring and 1 day at Spa. I doubt I will be able to swing that but right now that's the goal.

This year I explored 3 new tracks. Spa, Hockenheimring and Nordschleife. All good tracks with Ring and Spa taking top honors in my book. Hockenheim was good, but eh compared to the other 2.

I established a base lap time on the Ring to improve on, and this is what I want to focus on next year. I did a 8:38 this year, and I want to be at 7:5x by mid 2021. I can do it, still a lot of places to optimize. But this is why I want 4 day on Nordschleife next year.

Spa would be a good bonus. I got 3:02.1 last April in 38F weather. I can be under 3 min if I try again, and that would be a good bonus.

Coming back stateside anytime soon? Had a blast at grattan for 2 weekends. One motorcity bmwcca, the other with great lakes lotus.

Need some more M2s to represent!

I'll be home for a few weeks over Christmas break, but I'm on assignment till fall of 2021. So I won't be back at Grattan or Gingerman or Mid Ohio till 2022. :

Have you had a chance to drive Mid Ohio? It's not that much further than Grattan, and totally work going into Ohio for.

Also I'm not sure what I will drive. I plan to sell the M2 in Germany before heading back state side. Right now I'm leaning towards GT350, but I have to see what BMW has to offer for '22 model year, and what else is around and track worthy.

Hell yeah, glad to hear it. My favorite track back home. Like larger version of Grattan with more elevated changes and proper curbing. I look forward to see your thoughts and videos from there.

P.S. what kind of lap times were you running at Grattan in the M2? My best so far was 1:31.1 in the Mustang. I think the Stang would be stronger down the big straight, but M2 would have it it he twisters on the other side of the track.

Best time was 1:34.88. And consistently in the 1:35 range.. Have logs and some videos I need to compile.

Lots of room for improvement, I'm hoping to get below 1:30 next season when I'm there. I know it's doable. Another M2 out there was pretty consistent at 1:31 and was mostly stock (with an E85 blend).

That’s good! Well done. I know a few guys in Vettes and one guy with a E92 M3 running 1:27s and 1:29 respectively.

Best of luck next season and I’m sure you’ll be able to find few seconds with some more track time.

My quest for sub 1:30 lap will resume in 2022.

Sadly I was reviewing my data and I only managed to get video from my last session of the day where I almost ran out of gas. Lol. Had to cut the session early when my car said I only had 3 miles till empty.

I really need to remember to turn my gopro on.

Best times on that session were around 1:37. Rendering it right now and will post it up a bit later.

EDIT: who did you know in the E92? I know a few guys from MC BMWCCA running them.

This is my curse. I process a lot of information quickly but I can't remember names or dates.

Nice driving! Some more laps and you'll definitely optimize a few corners to gain some time. I think you can also carry more speed into the first corner (as long as you have the front grip), but the biggest time saver is optimizing the hairpin and straightening the line into the long straight. I shaved most time in these 2 areas.

Resurrecting my own thread as this season is about to kick off! Finally! F-U Covid.

This year I'm focusing on Nordschleife. Friday will be a refresher and the goal is to shake down the car and see if I can remember the track....and how to drive.

20th of July I'm back and aiming to get into low 8 min lap time

5th of August back again, and chasing laptimes.

Pretty good day today. Beat my time from last year by exactly 20s, but also had one close call. Saved it, but waaay too close for comfort. This is the slowest corner of the track, and I missed a brake zone by 2s or so.

I'm starting to realize that pulling off a good lap time on the 'Ring is a nerve wrecking experience. Have to be near perfect in all the sections, and get lucky with traffic, weather and temperatures. MPSS start getting greasy after 2 laps, so that doesn't help either.



Also mostly keeping up with a 911 Ring Taxi was a good confidence builder

Benchmark lap I want to reference later and compare progress against. 8.18.7 and I had the track pretty much to myself. I can already see I'm loosing time in the brake zone after the first straight in the video, the start/finish corner, and again in first corner after start/finish.

Completed another day at the 'Ring today. Did not crash, so that's good. Cool overcast conditions, and a lot of red and yellow flags. Frack was closed for almost 2h to replace guardrail posts and a good section of Armco after a GTR significantly effed it up. Car was missing wheels on one side.

So it was hard to get clean laps today, and the tarmac stayed cool. The Cup2s are pretty impressive so far. I need to get used to them. They have more grip I need to tap into.

I made a few line tweaks which feels good, but ultimately I did not improve on my previous best today. I matched it, but that was it. More track time in 2 weeks. I'll look through the GoPro footage to see if I have anything worthwhile to post.

So I did another day on the 'Ring today. Stayed on track, so a good day overall.

But I made very little progress towards my lap goal. I shave a few seconds, but I'm still in the mid 8:10s ... and I thought by now I can somehow utilize the Cup 2s better.

I think I'm still slowing down to much for a lot of the sections of the track. Also for some reason my GoPro stops recording videos longer than 15min, so I miss all of the action of the 3rd lap!

So my first track day for the year is (theoretically) coming up. April 3rd at Spa Francorchsmps. We will see if it happens, the organizers don’t know yet with Covid restrictions in place.

I’m hoping for one day at Spa and one day at the Ring. This will be. The first half of the season. Than in May we go back home to US, and I’m hoping to have my second part of the season at my favorite tracks in MI. But I will need a new track car first.

Oh, and since this is also a documentation of my progress toward 7:55 BTG time thread, here is my fastest lap from last year. 8:07 on the clock, corrected for traffic I'm guessing 8:00 to 8:02 area. But it's hard to say. What do you guys think? Was I close? Will get into the 7:5X rage this year. I just need one more chance Dammit.
