This seems like an appropriate video just about now.

I find Siri on my phone to be occasionally useful, very rarely very useful, and frequently very frustrating and maddening.

There's certainly a lot of room for improvement.

Many cars are coming with CarPlay and it is likely to be the standard in future years as automakers decide to spend less time trying to develop a unique user interface and instead rely on Apple and Google to do that for them.
+1

It is not perfect or essential at the moment, but I recommend it for the future. The enthusiast who had a Honda Civic in school with CarPlay and now wants a used M car will definitely appreciate it. The version in the 2017's is one the first of the wireless versions which makes does make it more seamless. Most importantly, CarPlay will be the only part of the electronic interface that will be updated over time -- as mentioned, there is already an update with 10.3. Also remember that BMW's iDrive system has been developed extensively over time and is quite good -- in other vehicles, CarPlay is better than the factory system.

I just upgraded to iOS 10.3. I'm off from work today and will sit down and play with apple CarPlay some more and see how it is ....

I choose Appleplay because I use an iPhone for everything and I'd kick myself if I didn't. The truth is Appleplay is annoying and intrusive to the BMW iDrive which I think is one of the best driver interfaces around and even better in MY 17. I'll turn Appleplay off but I'm happy it's there and hope it gets better integrated over time.

Carplay looks pretty bad in that video. Cue Mangofreshh to defend it with something about Toyota or some equally esoteric crap.

This is an old thread and I wish I had read it before ordering my M2. I'm not the biggest fan of Car play either, but I mainly use Android phones. I wouldn't say it's the worst $300 spent, but if I had to do it over I probably wouldn't have ordered it, because I never use it.

It may come in handy if I decide to get the next Iphone, but I'm still not sure I will use it because I never used it with my previous Iphone. I've never got fully into the Apple ecosystem as some, so it's not comfortable for me to use.

When I had my Focus RS I used Android auto, but mainly for Google music. That's actually the only thing I used it for. Android Auto is being updated soon also.

I'm not actually a fan of either system that much.

I love it. Yes sometimes it doesnít get a name correct whom I want to call or dictate a text. But thatís rare for me.

I believe this is unique to the person given how easily Siri understands your voice / accent

IMHO, Siri is nowhere near as accurate as Google assistant. I hear my friends repeating things over and over to get Siri to understand. My Google assistant rarely gets it wrong. The Google maps integration is superior with the assistant as well.

Strange...

I didn't spec it back in 2017 as it seemed pointless (although, address input for satnav is pretty irritating on the iDrive).

Had it on two hire rental cars last week and it was both pain-free and actually useful.

Plus, it seems i can now add it to the car for very little?

Did you have to redo the LCI cluster coding afterwords?

No all my coding was still intact cluster and taillights as well as all my other stuff. I used BimmerTech this time around they did it all remotely.

Ok been running iOS 13 beta for awhile now and I can definitely say CarPlay was worth the money. I just realized I can control my garage door through my car now!! I have never actually paid attention to since I'm usually in music app jamming out. Apparently it pops up on home screen when your location gets close to home.

So you have friends that do not know how to use Siri, and you know how to use Google assistant..that is what it boils down to. Siri is very useful to use if you know the commands and quirks of it.
