Fall / Winter Motor Oil Brand / Weight ?

Its time for an oil change.
Any recommendations for engine oil brand and weight for open track lapping during the cooler fall and winter months ? Ive run Motul 8100 X-cess 5w40 all summer, but thats probably not the best choice for Texas fall / winter track days. I'm OG FBO and have the oe oil cooler.
TIA for any / all suggestions.

I donít see anything wrong with 5W-40. You want 5W for flow at low temps, and 40 should be enough thickness to provide good coating and maintain pressure when oil is up to temp.

You could also go 5W-50. Mobil 1 and Castrol make full synthetic oils in those weights also.

My premise is that the engine is up to temp when youíre tracking during the winter months, so 5W or 0W is still ok.

Do you have a way of tracking oil temps and pressures? Thatís the only way to know for sure.

You may be right..on the 5w40..for here in Texas...and I do check for minimum oil temps (~165* F) on the BM3 dashboard....before putting the hammer down on track.

Is the BMW LL-01 designation not important ? I saw someone here using M1 0w 40 Euro Car formulation...which I would consider using...but that’s not LL-01.

LL is BMW long life certification. Iím currently in Europe and my car uses the BMW 0W-40 LL01. The recommended change interval is over 20k miles or 2 years.

You could run non LL oil and change it more often.

Btw, Iím in Germany and drive my car year round. So cold starts in winter and Nurburgring, Spa Francorchamps and Hockenheimring track days in the summer. I use the same oil year round. South Germany doesnít get much below freezing so I see no point. I will probably change it before the scheduled interval though. I know oils are good these days but 2 years and 22k miles with track days seems like a lot.
