BMW M2 in Winter
Hi guys,
I'm very close to getting myself an M2. I plan to use the car all year long as a daily driver. My concern is the winter. I live in Montreal, Canada and the winter is harsh here. I plan to drive it with a set of winter tires. But I would like to know your experiences. I've always had either FWD or AWD cars. This would be my first RWD. What winter tires would you guys recommend, if I still decide to get the car. Thnx |

I drove mine all year last year in Calgary. I bought the 18" BMW Cold Weather package and it worked like a charm. Never got stuck or any close calls but I don't think Calgary gets as much snow as Montreal.

I've always checked TireRack to pick out tires for all my BMWs although I buy them locally.
https://www.tirerack.com When BMW didn't yet offer Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer tires, my service manager was able to get them for me. If you're a BMWCCA member, the Roundel magazine often has $70+ tire rebate ads. My M2 is garaged during the 3 winter months, but I once bought winter tires/wheels for a 3-series, but it was a waste of money due to little snow that year. |

Drove all last winter on Bridgestone blizzak LM-60 tires in Michigan. It's a blast and very capable in the snow.

Michelin PA4 winter tires are the way to go. I went with a square set on 18" wheels. 245/40-18 all around. Wonderful winter traction in my 17' M2. I've even done ice racing with this setup.

Same set up for me, although the Germans are pretty good at clearing their roads. Wouldn’t say the same for my home state of Colorado...

Don't buy winter performance tires like PA4s. They are not dedicated snow tires.
For a Montreal winter get Michelin X-ice3s or Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2s. Both of those tires will be great in heavy snow. You need dedicated snow tires not subpar winter performance tires. I prefer the X-ice3 because their dry weather performance is waaaaay better than the Nokians. Nokians have the slight edge in snow and ice but not by much. I've ran both on my 1M and have driven through 20 inch blizzards with no complaints. If you've never owned a RWD car before make sure you get a dedicated snow tire.

i picked my car up in Jan 2019. swapped the MPSS with Pirelli SottoZero - 255 square set up. was able to drive the car 400 miles in a wintery mix. we had a mild winter. i probably will not even consider using it in deep snow. i have the option to work from home which makes it easier. another choice would be to rent an AWD vehicle if a chance of heavy snow is expected.

With proper winter tires, the M2 is great in the winter/snow. The M-diff definitely helps. I've had it in deep snow and ground clearance is more of an issue (I'm lowered now) than traction.

are you getting m2
or m2c if you are getting m2 definitely get full winter tires and not performance winter if you are getting m2c you are stuck with the performance winter. I dont think anyone make regular winter tires for low profile tires you will get stuck with pa4 in heavy snow storm. I am talking about unshovel ground with 10+ cm i got stuck last year. lol

https://www.amazon.com/Mr-Emergency-...19739056&psc=1 I still think performance winters are better for all around driving if you live in an area that plows/salts and doesn't always have snow on the ground. Canada may be a different story than Chicago but even with the snow storms, its 10-15 days a season of bad stuff with 90 days of it being cold but mostly cleared roads. It really just depends on the area you live in.

M2 Competition. I've driven Blizzaks through 10 cms of snow or more in the past with my e92. Wasn't sure how the ContiWintercontact TS830 would cope? |

I got the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2s studded , and car feels solid. Leave it in comfort, and it feels great. |
