Spark Plug Replacement Service Interval
I got an email from my local dealer saying my car was due for spark plug replacement. I'm the 2nd owner of a 2021 M2C with about 14,500 miles on it. I understand that BMW is suggesting spark plug replacement because of the time(appx 3 years 3 months) and not the mileage, but to me this still seems unnecessarily early. Here's the real kicker, they want $1800 to replace them!!! There is no way I'd ever pay almost $2K to replace spark plugs so I'll definitely be doing it on my own, but what are most of you guys recommending when it comes to the timeframe/mileage for replacing them?

I got mine done at 25k right before the warranty is over, you have a 2021 so maybe you still under the warranty and if you are I would take advantage of that even though 15k is definitely too early, normally I think recommended at 30k but they are probably using age (however if still under warranty, why not). As far as price yeah that is absolutely ridiculous, even for dealership, I know someone who got the dealer to do it on his m3 and was more like 1k which I think is still excessive for something that is relatively easy to do.

Yes spark plugs are covered under maintenance not warranty. But plugs are good for 30K so I wouldn’t replace them yet. Too bad you didn’t take your vehicle in while the maintenance was still valid. They would have given you new spark plugs then for free. But you really don’t need them yet.

I wouldn't worry about timeframe since I don't think they go bad just sitting in there. If you're stock then every 25-30k miles. If tuned, every 20k miles or sooner if they start showing signs of going bad. Take it to an independent BMW performance shop or do it yourself. Takes about 2 hours.

I would not replace it. Usually when people prematurely replace their spark plugs they start having issues. This could be from anything.
My M2c is almost 5.5 years old and still on original plugs. 12k miles on it. No issues. I will replace the plugs at 30k miles. Spark plugs is not like fluid that goes by time, its more mileage than time base.

As others have said, it's miles, not time, and 30K is safe if you're untuned. I imagine you could push to 35 or 40K if you watch your gas mileage (first sign of bad plugs). And as others have said, it's not that big of a job, and there are YouTube tutorials on it. If you don't want to do it yourself it shouldn't be much for replacement. Your local BMW chapter probably has guys that would be happy to do it for a few cases of beer.
If you plan to keep the car to 60/70/80k miles, get your plugs from FCP Euro. You'll pay a bit more, but you can return them for new at the service interval. Sounds weird, but it's true. |

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I'll rest easy knowing I have many more miles before they really require changing. Maybe I'll make it a future project if I upgrade my charge pipes and while I'm in there I'll go ahead and change out the plugs too.

There's 3 services in total they said I'm due for, spark plugs, oil change, and new air filters. They quoted me $230 for the oil, like $295 for the air filters, and then $1800 for the plugs. I could call again and see if there was a mistake but he told me what each service would cost and then gave me a total of like $2300 and change.

I was just recently (beginning of Jan) at BMW of Bellevue and was quoted the same for plugs and air filters - $1800 for plugs (not sure if that included new ignition coils) and $300 for air filters. I'll definitely be doing the work myself when the M2C hits 30K.

$300 for filters… yikes!! That’s a diy 30 minute job and the two oem filters cost 20-30 each.

Hah! Definitely a small world! Last year, while waiting for my daughter to finish up at a softball camp, I decided to hit up BMW of Bellevue to see what they had on the lot. I almost pulled the trigger on a Hockenheim Silver M2C that got traded in the night before. In the end, I liked the Long Beach Blue too much to get the silver one and bought my M2C from a BMW Club member in Northern California.

I know that dealers always charge more but I was thinking I'd pay a small premium to have this service appear in carfax as this instance I'm basically planning to combine the 30k + 4yr items. But if they quote me $1,800 I'll take the business elsewhere. That's ridiculous. I looked at a DIY video and I think its a bit too involved for what I'm comfortable with, but there's some independent shops I trust which I could go to instead. |
