1200 mile service

Hoping to get a little clarification on the 1200 mile service.

Does the 1200 mile service unlock any performance?
Is there a time to service if the 1200 miles crosses a 12 month period?

Thanks for the help in advance

It's 1200 or 12 months. No, there is no performance unlock. Very few cars have any lockout like this.

Yes and no. It doesn't unlock any performance but if you have followed the break in procedure and not had the RPM's above 5500. Once you go to 7k you will be very happy. This wasn't the case with the M2C. It had nothing above 5500.

ALSO IMPORTANT IMO:

Once you've had the diff fluid replaced. Immediatly take the car to a large parking lot and drive around in 3 steering wheel locked circles. 3 to the left and 3 to the right. Get that new diff fluid in every nook and cranny.

Very impressive! We still haven't met up here in Dallas, yet! Only at 2300 miles here, but planning on a trip to Austin in a month.

These days, if a dealership employee tells you something it's almost guaranteed to be wrong.

There is nothing unlocked in terms of power / performance at 1200 miles for any BMW and never has been (I don't count LC as performance).

Absolutely unlocks performance.
Just like a proper car wash.

Agreed!

Knowledge level of employees at dealerships is just terrible….some of the shit they make up is unbelievable.

Pretty sad!

This is real simple, just ask them to show you the documentation of the performance gains. (Spoiler alert, it isn't documented because it isn't real).

If it were real, it would be documented.

Thank you to all who have chimed in on this topic.

Maybe the “performance unlock” that so many are told is nothing but just dealership misunderstanding because they get to “turn off” the break in service warning message and then somehow thinks the car is going to unleash more power from itself …

In any case it’s good to know that motor oil/filter and rear diff fluid is replaced at 1200 miles or 1 year (I am not there in mileage but am almost there based on time).

I think this is exactly what is perceived by most technicians and service advisors. It is not that you get more power, it is that you can, based on BMW break in procedures, utilize 100% of the power of the vehicle after the 1200 mile service. The way it is often described to the owner is "Now your car is fully unlocked and should feel more powerful." Of course if you are able to use the entire RPM range, it is going to feel more powerful! Seems like classic ///Marketing on behalf of dealer employees.

But, nothing is locked during the first 1,200 miles. I took my M5CS to redline (accidentally) when I first got it.

So, the full power range is available from the moment you get the car.

Its just either employees trying to make naive owners feel better about their car, or the honestly have no clue.

FWIW, I'm friends with my service manager and he was under the impression that there's a performance unlock.

He told me they connect their machines up to Germany corporate when they do the break-in services and they code in an updated ECU map.

It felt stronger to me afterwards but could be bs, I dunno.

I've also received a few CELs and have an appointment to drop it off soon. I'm assuming Germany will be interested in why my CS has thrown a CEL 3 times that then goes away, so I may prod them for more info if I get to talk to someone from Deutschland.
