Dumb question-- I'm looking at a similar setup for when I inherit my father's house-- but I can't get a car on a lift due to the position of the garage opener on a center rail taking up just a little too much headroom.

Do you have garage openers on the door that mount on the side? Or at least not with a center rail? Or do you just open/close them manually?

Yes. You can have side mounted garage door opener that take less head space (as seen on my garage).

You will want a jackshaft opener and should also install a high-lift conversion for the door tracks. The Liftmaster 8500 is a popular choice and the high-lift tracks get the garage door tracks close to the ceiling. This website give more details on the conversion process.

I had my garage doors at my old house converted so I could make a four post lift fit and I'm having the same thing done at my new house.
