Q's about installing used M Performance Suspension. Please reply.
Hey guys, just picked up a used M Performance suspension, and had a few question about the install.
First, I'm not finding a dedicated video for this. Is that a bit weird, or not? Seems like quite a popular item for not having its own install video, no? Second, I know there is hardware that is "one time use only" that needs to be replace with new parts, but couldn't find a definite list, so I contacted Evan at GetBMWParts.com and he was quite helpful in providing me a list (the yellow highlighted parts don't show to be for an M2 when you put them in, but apparently they are). My question is; my car only has 14,000 miles on it, so are all these nuts/bolts/gaskets really necessary to replace, or can some be used again? Total as-is comes to $118 shipped. Thanks for any info, and for any install tips you might want to share as well! |

My car had 9 miles.

Please see my DIY on the KW V3 which are almost identical to the MP ones with the exception of height collar. It will answer all your questions.

The technically correct answer is that Torque-To-Yield bolts are single use only.
That said, there are plenty of people who reuse them and do not have issues. I'd never suggest reusing TTY bolts for say, a cylinder head, but for a component where failure will not be catastrophic, you might be prepared to risk it. For example, the aluminium undertray on the M2 has 8 x TTY bolts. If one of them were to fail, basically nothing will happen. Heck, if all 8 of them fail (how likely is that?) the tray might fall off but the car isn't going to explode or run off the road. Checking these at each oil change will satisfy all but the most pedantic of users. Suspension bolts? Probably somewhere in the middle. A failure could be a big deal so you should consider the risk associated with saving some coin. PS. Those strut & shock mount gaskets are just pieces of paper. They can get a bit sticky and tear when you pull the shocks out but if they hold together, there is no issue reusing them at all. Mine held together just fine. |

It wasn't that expensive, so I just bought it all, as that's what BMW recommends. |

A little bit easier to read list for those that find this thread in a search.
3 things: 33-50-6-866-038 - shock mount gasket is M2C ONLY, the P/N for the OG M2 is different, and I don't have it. I also didn't need it... 31-30-7-855-400 - hexagon screw with flange - will be a slightly different size and shape from stock, as per BMW. 33-52-7-850-600 - 12-pt nut - this nut was too short, and should be replaced with the taller version (34-33-9-806-226), so you need 4 of those, not 2 like shown in the list below. Also YouTube search F80 kw V3 install and you'll get some videos to support as well. As Mosely mentioned the MP is very similar to V3 and the F80/F82 install is very similar to ours as well. |

It's actually shaped like it would attach to the bottom of a small travel iron.

I'm not worried about most of it, but without seeing pictures of exactly what tools were used (even with the list) I'm still a bit nervous. As soon as I do the job I'm going to literally take a picture of each set of tools you need for each part of the job. I'm a visual type of guy, so it helps seeing things like that (for me). |

It is close but I just confirmed that it does work without the extension. You’ll be fine and nice tool collection you got there. Can’t wait to read your DIY thread.

This is what I'm using. Good thing I have a huge selection of 10mm's from all the Japanese cars I've owned. I confirmed it worked as well, which is great, as this was one of the things that was bothering me. I'm new to this pass-thru stuff. |

That's looking comprehensive as a set of tools....
Just a thought, how about a thin section spanner to hold the stem of the upper swaybar link still while you use a conventional socket or ring spanner on the nut? Last edited by M Fifty; 09-03-2020 at 02:09 AM.. |
