bootmod3: CustomROM release - Map Switching, Flex Fuel, AntiLag, New Map Editor...

bootmod3 CustomROM now available for N55-M2 engine vehicles!

All the features and customization previously released for the S55 and N55-EWG including MapSwitching, Flex Fuel, Antilag, Live Adjust burble and ethanol override, In-dash ethanol check and others are now available for the N55-M2 cars. This work starting with the S55 has been under way since last year and we are really excited to have it finally released on the N55-M2 as well.

bootmod3’s integrated Map Editor features 4800+ calibration tables available on the N55-M2 CustomROM for custom tuners on the platform to take advantage of. Advanced logging (RAM) channels support has also been expanded to include many new loggable parameters, many of which are exclusive to bootmod3 software customization.

New Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 2+ OTS maps are now also available featuring 4 integrated map slots, flex fuel, antilag and all the CustomROM features. Stage 2+ Multimap OTS map, with the presence of a Flex Fuel Sensor, scales all the way up to full E85 content fuels for those with upgraded HPFPs installed that can flow the required fuel volumes.

Simple question: For those of us without an ethanol sensor and switch between Stg 2 93 & Stg 2+ E30 OTS maps and fuel, can we set up map switching via the steering wheel to easily go between these two maps?

Do you have some of the same failsafes for antilag that MHD does?

“ There are also various safeties in place such as coolant temp, EGT temp, max duration per use, and cooldown time between uses. These values, as well as the time delay after button press until antilag activates are all set to safe values for those using the OTS antilag flash option. OTS users will have the ability to adjust the antilag boost target (max value depends on engine).
Finally, custom tunes will have the ability to adjust ALL of the above values. We will be uploading the updated XDF files today.”

I've been playing around with it tonight, it's so nice to finally have this feature.

Really looking forward to testing the anti-lag soon.

They have tons of safeties and tables to do all kinds of customizing. Look inside map description and in their map editor.

By all accounts anti-lag is pretty terrible for the engine. Is there actually even a way to implement this “safely” or is it always going to be detrimental in a significant way?

Yeah, I should have specified that.

Ideally, I would like to be able to choose which maps went in which slot instead of being locked into, for example, all stage 2. But this is a nice start.

This is great. I am wondering if I have a custom map with a tuner, I now see a convert to Custom ROM button but do I need to do this with the tuner or can I just hit that button and make the jump over myself? Very excited to add these features soon.

Are the stage 2 maps the same as the 5.9 version?

These are good questions I'm yet to see clarification on till this day.

1) How is the anti lag achieved from the engine perspective? I'm assuming it's not done via hanging at stupidly high rpm, so what exactly, when in the low rpm range, is giving the turbine enough momentum to make target boost?

2) Does it have anything to do with fuel economy?

3) One good application I'm thinking is, would it completely solve big turbo drivability issue if anti lag boost target set to 2-3psi daily driving? What if anything is being stressed in that case?

This seemed to have a lot of good info.

The info from the link is very outdated anti lag method. I don't think any BMW engine ever made pre builds boost with retarded ignition off throttle.

This should help to understand all about the CustomRom. Not sure why they don't post these links to alleviate all of the questions..

https://www.protuningfreaks.com/blog...i-enhancements

To read about the bootmod3 CustomROM features available on the N55 engine refer to document below:

To read about the changes in the new bootmod3 Map Editor, refer to this document:

For Tuning Tables overview for Map Switching, Flex Fuel and AntiLag refer to this document:

I see there is a flat torque map now under map switching. Are there any notes on that? I don't see any.

Love this map idea where you have multiple fuel options for one particular stage. I’d assume the flat torque gives you 369 lb ft of linear torque throughout the rev range, rather than having a massive overload of it at low rpms. Personally, I want all the torque I can get at any time...

I assume it revs out better, which interest me, but I don't see it under OTS maps and I'm not sure what gas in required.

If you read the BM3 link, that is what is happening here. There are changes to lambda and ignition timing. That's really the only effective way to achieve anti-lag through purely tuning changes. BM3 clearly doesn't strap an external combustor to the vehicle or create new valving pathways on the intake.

The short answer is yes, this will cause accelerated wear to down stream components like the exhaust valve, turbo, and cats by exposing them to higher pressures and heat. I can't speak to the amount of wear, but anti-lag isn't something you should be using often anyways.

Think of it like the race start function. Use it rarely with the understanding that you are stressing the components. Or don't use it at all. I've found that anti-lag really doesn't make much of a difference on Stage 2 93 octane. So I probably won't use it. But it's a cool feature to have.
