The latest: The regional engineer recommended replacing all the lifters. They have removed the cams, but still need to diagnose if any other damage has been done to the internals. Hopefully there isn't any and we caught this before it became anything worse...

I'll post a final update once I have the car back.

This is sounding like a design flaw with the S55 engine.

Is this issue prevalent?

I agree with this approach but it's unfortunate because I could see myself wanting to keep this one long term and modify it.

Not really worth it if it's a ticking time bomb (pardon the pun)...

My first thought was a defective / sticky hydraulic valve clearance adjuster. Had a few of those in my time and they were always bad from cold then settled as they warmed.

It's definitely cam related as the sounds is too slow for crank at idle. (Cams run at half crank speed).

The S55 adjusters are shared with most of the BMW range, very common cheap part

Good luck, keep us informed

I have this exact same noise with a B58, so it makes sense its a troublesome common component. What a waste of money buying those injectors was!

B58 doesn't share the adjusters with the S55 though...

But it does share them with several Rolls Royce models..

Final update. doughboy Was spot on. Replacement of the alignment and decoupling elements resolving the ticking noise. I'm ultimately happy that the dealership went through all of the motions to make sure it was resolved (TSARA case opened). Sewell Grapevine BMW in Dallas did the repair, for those in the area. Really happy with their service and the knowledge of the service writer.

Getting back into the car after 3.5 weeks of an X4 was mind blowing. How these two cars come from the same company is hard to believe.

Question to the group: How comfortable would you be taking a car back that has had the top-end dismantled and put back together? I take some comfort that all moving parts looked good, e.g. no scoring on the bearings, but am a little unnerved that the engine has seen this level of maintenance at < 9k miles.

I've not heard anything, and as the part in question is very common across the BMW range it would affect more than just the S55.

Just normal part failure rates I would think.

I would ask for an extended warranty on these bits. But yeah they should have decent mechanics so I would not worry about it.

What build date is your car... really wondering if I should take it in now.

What's the best way to determine build date?

use mdecoder.com and type in your last 7 VIN. Prod date should then show up

Garage List
I have a 7-31-2018 build and it's fine. Don't forget that the M2C build date is irrelevant since the S55 is used in the M3/M4. They didn't just start building these engines.

This.

Here is a link to a similar issue with an S55 from an M4. I don't think this is necessarily a far flung issue that most owners need to be concerned about and it was relatively minor in what needed to be replaced. There was no damage or premature wear to internals as a result.

3-4 weeks? I assume that's waiting for parts?

I wouldn't think it's value is diminished. For a start who will know except you?

It's just a minor mechanical repair, I wouldn't be concerned at all as long as the oil is confirmed clear.

Underneath all the modern electronics and auxiliary gubbins and plastic covers, IC engines are the same old lump of metal as they've been for years and suffer from the same mechanical probelms from time to time.

We'll see, I do have a Giulia QV test drive lined up soon.
If it’s indeed the same issue as what I had, I wouldn’t be concerned with engine damage. Mine showed no damage or premature wear with 9,000 miles on the clock.

While the work to correct is fairly intensive, the repair itself is minor. I look at it as I got a free comprehensive inspection with new seals.

Glad to hear, Niko. Enjoy your new, quieter car.
