I intend on keeping mine long term so I'm interested in solving problems as early as possible.
It's a very common issue on higher mileage cars. IMO it is not a design issue, or a gasket issue etc. This issue is just due to mileage and heat cycling causing the rubber gasket to age and dry up, this leads to cracking of the seal and thus leaks. This is pretty common on any rubber seal on any car.

Then you just replace the seal - personally I would do it preemptively before the oil leaks onto the serpentine belt and causes it to slip. Just make sure you prime the engine as per bmw's SIB whenever you mess with the oil supply, or else you will cause bearing failure.

Overall this is nothing terribly uncommon, it is just the way things are when rubber gets old.
My understanding is OGM2 doesn't require oil priming like old N55's

No that's incorrect, the SIB specifies all n54's,n55's and s55's must have the oil system primed if you interrupt it's flow. i.e. changing the oil cooler, changing the seals etc. Because the oil system really didn't change too much on the n55's throughout the years, we just have a second oil pump + better baffles and a better sump.

Oh not the filter cover seal (o-ring) itself, but the assembly seal

I'm not sure what you mean, but the any oring or gasket on the oil filter housing requires oil priming if you remove it, because you have to remove the oil filter housing or thermostat to get to it and that introduces alot of air into the loop. The only exception is the oil filter caps oring.

Changing the oil…

Replacing the o ring inside the filter housing requires oil priming ⁉️

What I meant was that It was just the oil filter gasket that you change during the oil change when you swap filters.

I believe it's always good practice to look under the hood often and just make sure nothing is leaking
Botched oil change. Got it.

Not a joke -- don't let an OFHG leak go on too long. Happens on all the N5x engines.

Many threads about the issue, such as:

That was my fear after inquiring more on the leak when it happened, happy to say I didn't have to deal with that issue
