Error "Right "brake light malfunction" (2017 non-LCI)

I'm getting this warning on a 2017 gen 1 M2 (non-LCI). In troubleshooting a bit, I removed the right rear brake light assembly (63217295428), and separated the "lens" sub-component from the gray plastic bulb panel. Check all bulbs in the gray plastic component, all checked out okay. All connections were like new, no corrosion or moisture at all. All wiring seemed fine.

One question I have is in the red lens component, there is one spade connector to a small white plastic connector toward the middle of the item. My guess is there is either a bulb or LED of some sort on the other side, inside the lens, but not sure if / how to access that? A continuity check on that connects to the "bulb" shows high resistance, like it's an open circuit. But if it's an LED of some sort that may be normal?

What is that thing in the middle of the lens, and is a brake light component? Perhaps related to the forced based braking that has different levels of brake light intensity based on pressure on brake pedal? How can I trouble shoot if this is the cause of the fault?

It seems a number of people have had the whole assembly replaced to resolve brake / indicator faults like this, but car is well out of warranty so trying to avoid just throwing $200 or so at this problem, and trying to trouble shoot to see if there is a lower cost fix that addresses the exact failure cause.

That looks like an F23 235, and just a single VIN. Are you saying that applies to all F23, and also my model, F87 (not mentioned in image)?

The F87 M2, F22 & F23 share the identical tail lights.

Same SIB applies to all of them, I figure that would be self-explanatory.
