I still cant believe the amount of people that waste money sending oil in for analysis on a newer car.

I can't believe this 5k oil change myth is still around in 2017.
Instead of wasting time and money on constant oil changes, send oil to the lab, if withing spec, increase interval.
Oil analysis is $28. Change is about $35 if diy. I'll just change after a couple track days or 5k and pass on the analysis. For me that's easier.

Oil is one of the easiest DIY, thats good strategy, and cheap.

It beats mindlessly changing the oil every 3k miles when one would likely be fine at 5 times that interval with the recommended synthetic.

TropicalM Just got my report back from Blackstone (uploaded).

While not necessary by any means, I found their report worth the $28 (if nothing else it is at least somewhat entertaining). Plan to keep the car a long time, and I think it'll be interesting to see how levels change over time. It's not like I'm changing the oil every week, so what's a report once or twice a year?

That's great, and thank you for sharing. I am planning to do the same, keep the car long term. I think it is worth the $28, and at least you know you dont have anything suspicious inside the engine. This car is definitely a keeper.

this 28 is on the top of my LEAST wasteful things I have done with money. YMMV. I think you might have a good thread here... what are the most wasteful things you spent money on your car?

You can't tell anything by looking at it. The oil turns dark in a few hundred miles. Now if its glittery, thats another subject.

This Savagegeese video expands on the topic of using oil analysis as a good indicator of engine health -- fail!!!

i guess you don't value your own time

i still think knowing for sure is better than just blindly doing short interval oil changes, plus they can tell if your bearings or other vital internals are going, potentially saving you a fortune (if out of warranty)
