Reportedly the service protocol stipulates that oil service indicator is NOT to be reset. So two months and 200 miles later, on my car's 1 year birthday, my car starts telling me it is time for an oil change. Then I get emails from dealer and BMW teleservice stating same. Then to cap it off a call last week from BMW teleservice. My dealer is 130 miles away, my car was just stored for winter and I don't need an oil change! I just find it annoying that this possibility is not anticipated and addressed through the system, and so the messages keep coming, even though I called dealer and BMW NA. Interesting the dealer said BMW would have paid for the oil change. I wii live with it and get free oil change in late spring, but still annoying. Maybe some will say do a reset but dealer said that would throw off other maintenance.

Thanks for the post and welcome. I was wondering myself what kind of notices I may be receiving when I fail to meet "normal" mileage/service requirements. I will be lucky to put even 5K a year on my car as it is not a daily and I will be storing for winters. Welcome to the modern world where electronic devices are telling you what to do 24/7.

I will most likely skip my second service as the car will see less than 3K before it is due next year and just because it is free it doesn't matter to me. I really don't like most dealerships and have already had a bad service experience on my 1200 so the less someone touches the car the better, the odds they will f-it up are pretty good so I'll do my own thing as I have the knowledge and know others that do as well. Fuck the system....

Just changed today and tallied up the costs. Oil and filter from Amazon and with 5% amazon cash back total cost was $36.

So you are only putting 5qts of oil in you car? I dislike going to my local Walmart, but was in there last week as I needed a key fob battery (2032), which they were out of, and wandered over to the auto section where Castrol LL eqivalent was ~$27 for 1.25 gallons or 5qts. Around $10 is normal for the proper oil filter. That is $37 right there and you need 2 to 3 quarts more oil to reach proper capacity. Not trying to be a pain in the ass, but I just don't see the math adding up?

Sorry, but I will need to see a copy of your receipt. :-)

Correct you are. I was there today and the price went up in store. On line they sell at $20 as does Amazon so I went with Amazon. I always buy 15 quarts at a time.

Oil
https://www.amazon.com/Castrol-03101...s=castrol+0w40
19.98 * 7qts/5qts * .95 (5% cashback) = $26.57 for 7 quarts.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
19.95 for 2 filters / 2 * .95 (5% cashback) = $9.48/filter

Total = $36.05

So not quite $35 but close enough.

Wow, nice, you shop better than my wife!

Btw, when I was reading the specs on the Castrol labels I noticed that only the 0W40 mentioned BMW LL-01.

I owe you a beer!

I've got 3 BMWs that I track and change oil on frequently as cheap insurance. I go through a lot of these consumables. Get the European blend for the LL01.

Does the 2 pack you linked to include the O-rings and drain plug washers?

I'd be very tempted to do my own changes, and if I had a quickjack, I am 99% sure that I would at those prices for a change!

How do you go about doing yours? the drain plug is hidden behind a cover and just putting the car on ramps changes the angle and the oil may not drain appropriately. I'm fine with doing the wife's SUV because there is enough space underneath anyway, and there is not much in the way over covers underneath the engine.

The filters come with new orange and washers. I use ramps to lift the front of the car.
