It's way softer. I think e9x is one of the best body styles Bmw has ever had, but since the transition from the e chassis to the f, the styling of m cars has gotten super aggressive with a ton of curves. To each their own, but it's a bit more reminiscent of jdm cars imho. That being said, the m2 competition is sexy

There is definitely a period where BMW transitioned from one design motif to another with a generation in between that blended both designs. The previous motif was the upside down A which had a softer more subtle look from the E series (E46, E39, E367/8) to the transition years (E9x, E6x, E8x) which blended both old and new motifs, to present generation with the more angular right side up A and aggressive look of the F cars. Personally I like the before and the after. The in-between cars (even though I owned an E60 M5) just didn't do it for me.
