Am I crazy for considering this?

For months earlier this year, I spent literally hours everyday trying to track down either reasonably priced used M2C's or securing an allocation. The prices never came down to what we had expected after waiting for months and as we all know, the used car market has been crazy and prices actually went up rather than down.

Luckily, I had some help with a from a fellow forum member and secured an allocation for a '21 M2C and it was delivered early August. The car is my daily driver and in some cases its great and in other cases (mostly winters in Chicago) it's probably not so great. I've managed to pull off daily driving my E46 prior to this for years through Chicago winters but don't know if I want to do it again with the M2C. It's possible with a winter set up, but I don't know if I want to put the car through harsh winters as I did with my other car.

I know... I know... all things I should have seriously considered prior to purchasing a $60k car. But I FOMO'd over the M2 being that they no longer were making the F87 and the M2C was just the car I really really wanted. I had not purchased a new car in 17 years and while it isn't my "dream" car it was the car that I wanted at this given time in my life.

I don't currently track my car and don't have the time to do so. It's just simply my daily driver, but I've always enjoyed having an M car as my daily. In any case...

1) I am considering parting ways with the M2C and perhaps purchasing a '22 M240i xdrive. Probably a better overall DD and also can handle the winter a lot better than the M2C. But to sell a future classic for an M240i? Not sure if that's worth doing so on top of probably losing a lot more money to depreciation long term. Although, reviews on the car have been solid so far and the B58 has been overall a decent engine.

2) Sell the M2C and wait for G87 M2 in a few years. I do have a home being built in Florida that should be ready towards the end of '22 and thinking I would just keep that car over there. Being that M2C prices are pretty high right now, I could actually walk away with a few grand over what I paid for the car, which is crazy.

3) Try to find a cheaper used DD to have for the winter, but biggest issue is the used car market being sky high that I'd simply be over paying.

I'd consider the '22 BMW M3 X Drive, but that front end... I still can't do it.

Yep, you're crazy. You just have the itch to buy something new. The charm will quickly wear off no matter what you buy. Then you'll probably regret parting with the M2c.

Keep it and buy a cheap winter beater. (Perceived) problem solved.

As someone who has considered both selling my OG M2 for a 240i xdrive & a next gen M2, I'd say keep your current car if you're satisfied with the transmission/color choice.

240i lacks in the looks department & yeah it's AWD/B58, but it lacks character that the M2C has. As with the newer M2, I don't see it being worth the jump just because of a heads up display or carbon roof.

The M2C will probably be the better driving/feeling car id assume. It is a tough call in terms of M2 versus M2.

Just get a winter beater on the cheap. I wouldn't sell my m2 because of winter worries.

The 240 maybe a good idea if they weren’t so expensive. You are going to be paying prob 55k for it if not more so its not really that much cheaper than the m2c at the end of the day. It will be better in winter with the x drive no doubt but only if you put proper tires on it. Personally I would either get a beater or just get some winter wheels tires and run the m2. I work from home so the m2 won’t see too daily winter here in upstate ny but it will see some and honestly I am excited for it.

I'm in a similar situation as you, so I went out and bought an Audi RS3 for the winter, as there's no way I was putting the M2 on the road in the winter. Here it is the other day getting winter shoes.

From what I can tell about you reading your post, you have the means to have a second car, so unless you just want a new car, I wouldn't sell the M2

How much better will the 240 be over an M2 with winter shoes?

M2C + cheap daily winter beater car with snow tires.

Even though the M2C with snow tires will probably do fine, there's an increased risk of damage from all sorts of hazards.

I live in Chicago and unless you actually want to make money right now and get out of the car, get another car as a winter beater. Then move the car to Florida in 22. If you have doubts about the car and worry about the next M2, sell while the market is hot. The next car will always be better on paper, you can only decide if that's what you want.

I will not drive my CS in the winter and wouldn't get winter tires for it even though it will work. I've done it in Chicago, e.g. e92 M3 with Dunlop winter tires on 18 inch wheels, lots of fun…..

Get a beater for the winter. In a similar boat, also in Chicago. FOMO'd about the M2C and got one of the last in July. Planned on making it my DD as that was all I ever knew how to do, I've never had two cars before. Learned pretty quickly that I want to keep this thing long term and don't want to put the miles on it or subject it to Chicago winter salt. I just put it away for winter storage.

Option 3, get a second car. Either used or through a lease as mentioned above.

I was a bit anxious myself for this coming winter but our renovations are going to be completed ahead of schedule and the M2 will sit in the garage after they clear out. In the interim I can drive my previous daily during the winter.

Appreciate everyone's feedback!

Just to clarify, I do not have any feeling of getting anything new. Just didn't want to put through the M2C through winters.

Probably will go with option 3. Are Kia Forte's really leasing @150/mo?

learn car control and drive m2c in winter. You will have more fun than summer cruising.

It's not so much driving in the winter, its more-so driving the car through winter, snow, salt etc.. etc..

I already did it with my E46 M3, it wasn't all that bad (even with just all-seasons) but it ended up getting rust by the rocker panels that I had to end up fixing.

If you got a m240 then it would be subjected to the salt as well. That doesn't do your m2c any favors because it won't be yours anymore, the next owner might drive it in salt anyway. Chicago is flat, with proper tires the snow shouldn't be a concern on either car, just salt and other hazards. If something were to happen it's going to ruin a 55k+ car either way.

Very true.

I think it's just the "prestige" that its "the m2" vs "oh its just a m240i"

At the end of the day, you're right. Still putting almost an equal value car through that stuff anyway.

Same opinion as others, to get a winter beater. To stay "in family" look for a used X3. I've had the first gen and second gen X3, makes a great winter daily. It will still be useful in FL for errands to Home Depot!

240i will depreciate much faster than m2c so I would argue the value is not equal.

for me the biggest danger during winter are OTHER drivers and not conditions on the road but less exposure to salt and sand is definitely better

My wife has a GTI that we use for winter duties, I threw on some Blizzaks and the car handles just as well as my Grand Cherokee did in the snow in most road conditions.
If I were in your shoes, I would see if there are cheap leases on FWD cars and invest $600 in some winter tires. Drive it and sell the tires when you move to Florida. If you decide you don't need the leased car, you can probably buy it out and sell it for a profit.

M240i over the M2c? Hell no. G87 would be a different story as I think it will be epic. We don't know how it'll compare looks wise though to the F87, may not be aesthetically as nice. But I can guarantee you with the info that's been leaked thus far it will preform like an M2cs.
