Pointless to get SSK without reducing rev hang?
Hi all,
Contemplating getting a SSK to improve the shifting feel. I'm wondering if it's pointless to get a SSK if there's no way to reduce rev hang or without getting a lighter flywheel? Also, I was reading this article where it states that a SSK "...maintain[s] a high engine rev range for optimal power." Is this true for cars with rev hang? |

I'm not sure I understand. I have the autosolutions SSK and can conclusively say that even with the stock flywheel, the SSK removes all the side-to-side and front-to-back slop, decreases the shift throw and provides a much more precise/notchy shift feel.

My understanding is that mating a turbo motor with a light flywheel isn't necessarily a good thing. Upshifting you go off boost, if revs drop too low before you're back on throttle you'll add turbo lag. Maybe with a good SSK you can shift fast enough, for 20min track sessions that might be OK but go on a twisty mountain road (we have a couple here 60+km 250+ corners) and I bet it would get tiresome having to do lightning shifts or frustrating with the lag for 'normal' shifts. For me maybe the best thing about the AS SSK is the precision shifting across the doglegs, it really is hard to miss a shift where as with the loose/rubbery oem shifter it can happen especially when you're pushing hard. |

I don't know why but I feel like the car (M2C anyway) is less-often naturally in the right rev range during upshifts with Sport. I can shift more smoothly in either Efficient or Sport Plus.

The s55 already revs quick in 1st and 2nd. I think a lw flywheel would be terrible. |

Thanks for the response guys and my apologies for posing such a confusing question. With a SSK, shifts would become faster, but if there is rev hang in our cars, the shift would complete before the rpms have dropped to their optimal range. With a lighter flywheel, it would fix this issue since revs would drop sooner.
It's a big mod to add and I don't really see anyone on the forums doing it, so it's hard to ask for feedback. |

Also takes slop out of the linkage for more pleasing shift action. The rev hang is produced by the dme depending on drive modes and shift speed. If you shift real slow ie drop the clutch for a long time it tries to slow the rev drop for you. If you shift fast its never an issue. |

Anyone consider a lighter flywheel for the faster revs then?

I ran a Lightweight flywheel on my BSP E36M3. On that car it was a great mod.
