Jeff,

Do a search for the Auto Solutions SSK, Ultimate Clutch Pedal (UCP)

One of the top 3 mods you can do to any BMW....

he said clutch and smfw (single mass flywheel)

OP, the stock tranny is quite stout and can handle 600-700hp M3/M4s. Unless you're going big turbo and 1000whp I don't see the need to replace it.

+1

600-700 wtq no problems on the stock clutch, bmw did a good job over building these cars powertrain wise.

Very reassuring isn't it, coming from VW built to a clear limit and if you map manual cars it's basically 50/50 if you'll get slip or not.

Is your car over 600wtq?

Do we have more data on this?

How long did the stock clutch last at those higher torque levels?

Ps2 s55 cars aka m3 and me, so far I've never seen one fail at those power levels, so who knows the life span of the clutch at these power levels. Also it depends on how much you're going to launch it and such, so everyone's experience can be different.

Pure was one of the first to do so and they reported that the clutch was able to handle those power levels no problem.

Btw the s55 transmission and clutch is shared on the m2, before you start questioning differences.

I must emphasize that part about everyone's experiences being different. My clutch (6MT) was consistently slipping on the dyno in 5th gear at around 570wtq. Had it been in 4th gear, things may have been different. My car and the clutch at the time had around 44K miles on it since it's my daily.

I'm also currently doing research on solutions myself (New OEM, Spec, Clutchmasters, etc).

44k and already slipping? Either bad driving techniques or your route has stop-n-go uphill both ways for your daily driving lol.

I drive my car

But in all seriousness, there are only a few forum posts spotlighting what the clutch can do at a single point in time and it's heavily dependent on the tune as well. A linear torque curve may have prevented slippage while a tune targeting a flat torque curve could see different results. We have no idea how abused these examples are and how long they were driven for at those power levels on the stock clutch - just tough to say.

Edit:
Attached is another data point where an N55 M2 with 15K miles started getting clutch slip below 600 wtq (580-590):

Just because Pure reported something means we base everything off that? I don't think so.

If according to BMW is correct, 560wtq is already pushing over that 600tq rating.

Need more guys pushing these manual setups to get a better feedback. Either way, if and when the clutch goes out it sounds like we will be looking for aftermarket options that will handle more torque and abuse!

Any one running an aftermarket setup?

Theres motiv which i haven’t seen reviews of.

And Spec, which i see some f80’s are running.

Seems like they are all around the same price $2300-2500 are organic and hold about 900/1000ftlbs. Didn’t get a firm
# from CM but told em I’ll be about 600wheel..Wish there was a cheaper/easier option but seems like these are the choices. Assume all will be slightly chattery and be a lil less street friendly than stock..Anything else to consider?

Those seem to be the core options in that price range.

Anecdotally, I know a few owners have gone from CM to Spec. Then a few from Spec to XClutch. And a handful of DKM to XClutch.

None the other way around.

Anyone glazed a clutch and found first to engage with less smoothness, or like it's a bit more abrupt?

I think maybe I feel it at low speed when I'm 100% more mode. Day to day at 70% settings I don't feel it.

Yes. Had the CDV removed when I was on the stock clutch. Now I have the E9X slave cylinder with the XClutch kit.
