BMW Design Chief: BMW Electric Vehicles Will Have Separated Kidney Grilles

Via: https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/n...ling-direction

Quote:
Designers ditch controversial grille

The unusual grille of BMW’s 2018 Vision iNext, which previews a large electric SUV due in 2021, has been abandoned following feedback, design chief Domagoj Dukec has revealed.

Most of the two vertical bars that separate one kidney from the other made way for the iNext’s arsenal of sensors required for autonomous driving. “We test what works aesthetically,” said Dukec of the iNext, which “reinvented our icons and form language. We connected the kidneys because of sensors, but we’ve decided not to do it. It wasn’t considered to be a BMW kidney grille any more.

“The grille is critical, so the iNext, the i4 and the iX3 will get separated kidneys – we spent the money to have sensors that can see through the chrome.”

Duh. So all the cattle have escaped the pen except for one runt and now the gate is closed?

The grill is butt ugly (I am being generous). Breaking butt ugly into two butt ugly pieces simply doubles the ugly quotient.

I am on my second BMW phev so I do like electric vehicles. But, to quote Adlai Stevenson, it will be hell freezing over before I buy another one that looks anything like this.

I really question his claim that BMW owners are positive about these new grills.

Ditto to the above. I owned BMW's until the "Bangle Butts" came--switched to M-B for my next 4 cars. Came back to BMW when the rears got better for next five cars. Won't be buying any BMW's with these monstrous grills.

Oh the irony of talking about grilles for vehicles that don't require them, not to mention the fact that they have grown exponentially larger.

BMW is in for sales. They are a for profit company. If the masses want bigger grills then that is exactly what BMW will make. Bigger grills.

They don't care about the enthusiasts as much as the masses because they buy more than the enthusiasts do. Which in effect creates new enthusiasts and the older ones will probably leave the brand. But it doesn't matter because BMW still wins.

I'm done complaining about the larger grills. They ain't listening guys so why bother. My lease is up next year and we shall see if I will get the last BMW without ridiculous grills. M850i GC or M5 comp. I've not completely ruled out switching as yet.

They finally looked over next door and realized Mercedes is making cars that look 10x better than BMW.

Wake up BMW design team, wake up!

Mercedes is going that route too. Seems
to me a lot of folks here will have to either stick with their current rides longer or start buying old/vintage BMWs...

I’m not for the big grilles but I do think they look less buck teeth-like if they’re connected..

If you’re going to backtrack, backtrack all the way and make them smaller!

These larger grills are like someone who received too much collagen filler in their lips. They are unnatural.

There is nothing wrong not having a grill at all on electric cars.

Tesla proved that already and it can look very nice.

True (and IMO they both look horrible), but the larger grills work better with the Mercedes design language than they do on BMW's. The argument that all other car brands are doing it doesn't really substantiate going in that direction. I don't see people clamoring for cars because they have bigger grills than others.

I dont suppose you need to question claim, just check sales numbers. BMW is currently growing faster than before, so there would be more of "brave" designs. Such as polarizing design for new 4-series front end.
For one, I agree with statement that you cannot please everyone. For example, even though design for 8GC is generally considered one of the best in recent years, there are plenty of people who consider it butt ugly...

Ummm no. I dislike the Washed out front end of the Model 3. And the pre-LCI (2016) Model S front end looked much better to my eyes.
