I wouldn't say that in the CS forum, you'd be tarred and feathered and run out of town on a rail.

Nah, I had a M2c and was very happy with the car. The M2c was so good that it was easy to justify the upgrade. I've been modding cars all of my life, it was nice to have it done for me. While I do understand that the cost difference is substantial, to say the cs is not a better car is simply close minded.

Garage List
2020 M2 Competition  [10.00]
2007 E86 M coupe  [8.38]
2002 E39 M5  [9.00]
These kind of lists are always fun and encourage discussion and debate.. As has been noted, all of us would order the list differently. TG apparently surveyed their staff, but the number of persons responding and methodology is not specified (sorry, I'm from a scientific background!).

Anyway, I own three cars from the list. The only one I contest in the E39 M5. It is my favorite car ever. The fact that it is understated is the whole point of M5s (even to some extent more recent M5s including the F90, albeit less so). Having owned my M5 for 18 years, I am clearly biased, but I would easily swap its position with either of my other cars on the list (Z4M coupe, M2C).

As for their #1 choice, from what I have read it is all that, but agree that without a MT it cannot be the pinnacle of M.

The list says the M2C is better. I have to go with that. Sorry

My car high on the list = good list
My car mid on the list = at least I made the list
My car low on the list = bad list, writers are clueless
My car not on the list but multiple convertible boats and an X5 made the list = flips table, google new top M lists, start process over
I'm here ^

That is the same for the 3 m2.

I have an OG - OG the best, the sound omg lighter
I have a comp - real M car. CS too expensive
I have a CS - how the m2 should be, its like a different car. It even won a magazine award

Or you can just think of it logically

M2 = N55

M2C = S55 completely different car now from the OG

M2CS = S55 tuned with better suspension .

The M2C is your best choice out of all 3 - that's why it's number 10 on the list .

Having only driven the comp I can't speak on the other 2

BUT

the OG does sound better

the M2C has a better motor though

and for 20k more I would hope the CS is a better car than the M2C.

The list does not matter but I agree that it is obvious why the comp rates above the CS and that is bargain price...

Everyone will have their opinion... mine is that I would be happy with comp, OG or CS... I ended up with a comp but almost bought an OG. The CS is out of my price rance and specially since I want to mod my car for track work

I agree with your post. The CS is arguably the best F87. The power argument is valid unless you have an early M2C version that can easily run other tunes including the CS tune. The other main difference is the adaptive suspension. Some people swear by it and others just want to rip it out and add track friendly coilovers.
I would take the CS over the C but not for an additional 20k. The jury is still out on long term resale value of the CS, we just don't know yet. They are all great cars!

On absolute terms, I’m sure the CS is a better car (I’ve never driven one). But if a car is significantly more expensive, then you begin to compare it to like priced cars and it becomes a little less impressive in that context. One of the charms of the M2 is that it’s affordable. It’s possible that this is what TG was thinking here.

I’m not saying anything bad about a CS - I wouldn’t throw one out of bed. But I was happy to allocate the money saved by getting M2C over a CS, towards other cars.

Just another point of view.

This list shouldn't be taken that seriously anyway. Everyone has their own preferences for which M ranks higher or lower, but clearly the F87 holds SOME place in our hearts since we're driving one, right?! . Happy Friday, folks!

These rankings are...odd but that's okay, it's just one guy's opinion. The real winner here is us, we get to drive some pretty amazing vehicles. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter if some random guy thinks a F87 M2 is 'better' than a E46 or vice versa. Each true M car is special, enjoy it.

The CS is undoubtedly the better car. It's comical that some in this thread seem to be arguing otherwise. As the article pointed out, the CS's issue is strictly tied to its value proposition.

Here's how I look at it…

When I was car shopping, I cross-shopped the M2C vs the GT350 and ZL1. After a lot of deliberation and test drives, the M2C won out as the best all-around proposition, between the 3.

However, with the CS currently sitting in the ~$100k used market value, I'd have to put it up against the nutty GT500 and low mileage 991.2 911's. That's a battle the CS simply wouldn't win, at least for me.

Cool, I was pretty sure anyone here would be able to spot the difference if not under influence

It's in a great company in that list, and I'm glad I have mine. The recognition is also a good sign for future collectibility and value.

If I had the $ and garage space I'd love to add one of these pumpkin E92 M3 though.

I'd take the GT350 or M2C over both the GT500 and 991.2 even if they were the same price. Both much more fun cars if your priority is driving enjoyment rather than statistics.
