If I remember correctly Mr. also thought the ecu was messing with the engine, to not over stress the OPF. Not only do EU cars have a more quiet exhaust, the OPF might actually be changing the driving charastic of the car. BMW did state they had to up the EU boost 0.1bar to accommodate the OPF.

The M2C has a really deep tone that doesn't seem to be present in videos / recordings... It's hard to capture.
edit: a friend and I compared his M2 to my M2C and in sport+ mine is deeper and it pops and crackles a LOT more.

Of course the OPF equipped M2C will sound weaker as the OPFs restricted exhaust flow and increase back pressure. Hence the cumulative effect of sound reduction and reduce engine responses as it is harder for the engine to breath. Fuel economy suffers too. They are much more restrictive than cats and are the real nemesis of engine performance.
I wouldn't bother tuning a car with OPFs because if they are stuffed the manufacturer will blame the tune and you will have to replace them out of pocket. The pricing of some of those particulate filters make my knees go weak. Last edited by Karmic Man; 09-20-2018 at 04:04 AM.. |

How the world changes. I remember when the US had the cartoon bumper bars and strangled engines. All those freak show e30s. And I especially remember the EU v US e36 M3 saga. This was the era of mailing lists and Usenet and dial up modems.
It’s fantastic the US finally gets the certified A grade prime beef. Also tremendously happy Australia dodges a bullet and gets the good one again. Phew! Amazed the UK has been lumbered with this. I’m sure there is a lot of cursing in the direction of Belgium. |

I love the e30 too. Loved mine.
I’m guessing you never saw the US bumpers or the engines they got? Like a funfair attraction. |

EU politically sucks 100% but I still live an hour's drive from the German Autobahn. No week goes by when not seeing >200kmh/125mph :-) Cheers Robin |

what we really need is for a US owner to Dyno a car and a Euro owner to dyno a car and see what difference the OPF's are making to the power! Ideally on the same type of Dynos so the outputs are comparable! For me the sound isn't such an issue but if the power has been affected then its the road to sorrow for us europeans as the emission restrictions are only going one way.........

I remember we had the 321HP M Roadster/Coupe overhere. A friend of mine had one a n M Coupe. great scary car in the wet, a German TVR
The USA etc got the 240(?) HP M Roadster/Coupe Those were totalky different engines to begin with and 80HP is a huuuge difference. The EU/US S55 difference is the OPF and thus EU version running 0.1 Bar higher boost. So they're not different in terms of power and speed... Still sucks,OPF:-/ Cheers Robin |

Power output could very possibly be the same, but I wonder how do throttle response and turbo lag compare because of the OPF, noise I don't really care.

Any idea if the OPF used on the EU-spec M2C goes through a periodic burn-off cycle like the Diesel versions do? Just wondering if performance and sound changes as a car gets older, or does the OPF stay pretty consistent on backpressure over time?
