Interesting comments about the N55 after 100K miles. I had similar issues with my E36 M3 years ago. I bought it used with 84K miles for about 25K, all I could afford at the time. The water pump and valve cover gasket were things I remember replacing.

Having said that, I had the car 13 years and it ran well for the most part. To the OP, I agree with not going for the M2 with 100k miles, unless you're comfortable wrenching on it yourself or have the money to get it serviced when needed.

Garage List
70k miles is still enough for me to say why not get the M2 at 100k. As long as it's properly maintained and relatively clean.

I'm interested to see what decision you made. I say M2 and it's not even close.

Certain BMW engine bay parts such as valve cover gaskets, Oil filter housing gasket, oil pan gasket, thermostat, water pump may fail anywhere between 60,000 to 120,000 miles, and that's got nothing to do with how well maintained or gently it was driven…
Above items are not too expensive and if you are a moderate level DIYer, it shouldn't be a concern for a car with 100,000 miles.
BMW Turbo engines are generally going to be less reliable/more maintenance compared to NA engines, that's just a fact…
