major OCD

had a new front tire installed at the dealer today because of some sidewall damage. my beautiful front driver side black 437 came back defiled with this crooked strip of day glow mini-weights on it....... i'm not even going to talk about the amount of tire mounting paste on the rim and sidewall that the tech left for me.

That's a fair bit of wheel balancing.

If it really bothers you go to a tire place and have them use black weights. Typically BMW don't use those....can't imagine why not.....likely just to annoy over-paying customers like you and me.

Yeah, not sure what is up with the color of those. I'd definitely want black weights. GL!

I have always wondered why they can't put these weights elsewhere on the rim, like more to the inside so they are not as visible. Is there a technical/physical reason? Or is is just laziness/apathy on the part of the tech?

OP- these are particularly horrible, can they at least be painted black?

they're adhesive, i'll swap them out. i'm going to Autozone this afternoon to buy black ones. i couldn't sleep last night. this has been a solid 9.5 event on my OCD Richter scale.

Better to have all that tire mounting paste all over the rim as opposed to having scratches. As for the weights just mask off and paint the weights. No biggie that is what I do normally.

it's actually not a lot of weight....those are relatively tiny....1/4oz? they just look obnoxious. two "regular" sized weights (what I have from the factory on the other three wheels) sized weights would equal that big hideous strip.

Those would drive me nuts. Looks terrible - can you get black weights instead?

In this day and age dealers and tire shops should stock both silver and black wheel weights especially given the rise of OEM black wheels. This looks horrible and I would take it to a place that has black weights.

I know your response is old but its to "balance them" You need them on the edges for that. Weight in the center wouldn't have any effect. If the inside weighs more than the outside it wouldn't be balanced, it would wobble or fall more to the inside.

i took the wheel off the car today and replaced with 1/2 oz black weights. the horrible day-glow mini-weights the dealer used were only 5 grams each.....hence the 8" long obnoxious strip of them. I feel much better now.

What's the name of that tyre shop?

My guess is it's not 'Weight-a-Minute'...

Cheers

That is just wrong on so many levels. Firstly, bad colour choice for the weights. Secondly, that looks like 11x5g weights. The same balance could have been achieved by hiding 1x30g weight behind one of the right spokes (as per the picture orientation) and 1x25g behind one of the left spokes. Third, the weights can be placed further inside the rim – they wheel is balanced radially, not laterally so the assertion that they have to be near the outside edge is untrue. Finally, the tyre should have a small painted dot on it somewhere – this indicates the point of minimum static weight balance (of the tyre only). This dot is normally positioned adjacent to the valve stem since the valve normally corresponds with a heavier spot on the wheel and the two offsets will cancel each other out. However, if a wheel comes up really out of balance like yours seems to be, the tyre can be rotated on the rim before you need to start adding weight. In your case, the paint dot should be opposite (not adjacent) the valve stem. If it isn’t, your tyre tech is incompetent or lazy.
