I talked to the BMW Genius by phone last week to see if they had the date for arriving at port. My car has been sitting in Bremerhaven for over a week now. The BMW rep said that they are sitting at port a lot longer than usual due to production schedule issues over COVID. He indicated that cars can sit there for 2-3 weeks, waiting to get scheduled onto a ship.

I've looked into that avenue. I guess the big if is - will they allow you through passport control using that logic?
With Hungry closing it's borders effective today and Slovenia putting up check points, I think land travel could be compromised. There are a couple auto ferries between italy and croatia though.

Oddly, my contact at the local dealer tells me that there are no significant delays they are experiencing at this time for cars arriving from Bremerhaven, M or non-M alike. That's for non-ED cars though.
Perhaps my car is being treated differently since it was diverted from ED to direct ship queue rather then being shipped to the port directly from Leipzig.
I am about to stop caring, start looking for some winter wheel/tire solutions, for its expected arrival in December.

Ouch - My sales guy is telling me I need to make the call. And I don't see the situation changing. He did say that PCD would be about 8 weeks out if I chose that instead, but I'm really doubting that based on what you guys are reporting.

When's your delivery date? I've always thought you had to buy the car about 2 weeks out? And if you go PCD, then you don't have to buy it yet, right?

My date is Sept 18th.
I would assume that you're correct regardless of PCD or dealer delivery the paperwork isn't due until you go to actually take delivery

Hmm...I've been toying with the PCD as well...but I did that, 8 weeks would be fine...but late November or December, forget about it, I don't want it.

I'm considering it - PCD is a blast (it's no Europe though). But it would be a slow go during the break in trying to vary speeds and rpm. Then there would need to be the 1200 maintenance somewhere along the drive to Colorado for me. And you're right on about the tires and potential for cold weather.
I just wish they would upgrade the facilities in CA to allow delivery there too

It almost seems to imply that transit is not limited to Non-Schengen zone of the airport. As in, oh, I am here to pick up my car and drive to a country where I am allowed, i.e., Croatia. That wasn't my plan for this trip...but if it would work, I'd go for it.

I did a BMW CCA M Day at the PC this Saturday and met Donnie Islay. We were talking about the travel restrictions...if there is a way to make it work (via Croatia etc) I'm going to try it as well. In your example, "Exception: transit" seems like "Exception: proven negative test result"...I read those as exceptions for German citizens (who can enter) but not US Citizens who are still restricted.

We probably have two weeks before we need to finalize all the paperwork/pay for the car. I'm scheduled for Sept 26th in the morning...it would be ideal if BMWNA gave an extension, but it doesn't sound like that is happening from everyone's emails with Raven at BMWNA.

You won't be permitted to exit passport control. Already checked this one. Also tried transit from Croatia. doesn't matter since germany is more strict than EU. you must be a resident of the 3rd party countries permitted to enter. they barely let my UK and Croatian friend that reside in germany back into the country from the austrian border driving!

My car is on the move. I called BMW Genius yesterday and they did not have a date or ship assigned for transport. I checked tonight and now it is in transit. Victoria Highway left port today, so it might be on that ship. I am going to call back tomorrow.

I asked for Oct 29th. I don't think we will be able to travel still, but I will keep on pushing for as long as BMW allows. If we ultimately cannot do the last ED I decided that I will take the family next year and replicate my route in a rental m550d wagon from sixt.
