Manual Trans Gear Lever Vibration
Question for you guys. When accelerating in 4th gear the shift knob has a rather heavy vibration that the other gears do not. This is through most of the rev range 2000-5500. I am not resting my hand weight while driving on the shift knob but just a feeling I've noticed while changing through the gears. I know a slight vibration or feel is normal as it's a manual but I would say it's a 300% increase in tangible difference from all the other gears and 4th gear. Thanks for you time.

Every manual car I have driven that isn't a cable shifted car has done this in 4th. I consider it normal

I paid close attention to the shifter over the weekend, softly touching the knob in each gear.
4th didn’t seem to exhibit any more vibration than other gears. All very slight vibration. |

Thank you for the input. That slightly concerns me as mine is quite obvious. I’ll definitely mention it next time I’m at the dealer. Hopefully a few others can chime in.

My 2020 M2 CS has had the same 4th gear shift lever vibration you described from new. I thought it was strange because my 2019 M2C had nothing of the sort and I had them both side by side for several months. I haven't investigated it yet or notified BMW of the problem. Curious how common it is.

likely low rpm, high speed, high boost. A quick search reveals this problem is somewhat less isolated than we thought.

It's at any speed/RPM/throttle input/boost level. It does it maybe 8/10 times. The times it does not it is just like the other gears and there is no vibration in the gear lever. I've brought it up twice the BMW and they say it's normal, but they've noted it so in case it's a issue later they have a track record. I'd rather them not tear apart a transmission over a non drivability issue. I just don't want any issues if it requires a replacement down the road.
I don't notice any driving issues just more of an oddity. My 2017 didn't do this, but whatever.

Bumping this old thread as I’m experiencing the exact same thing and I’m at a bit of a loss.
I just traded my 14k mile 6MT M2C in for a 3k mile 6MT CS. After getting more time behind the wheel, I’m finding that 4th gear has a very notable increase in vibration feedback through the shifter than any other gear. I don’t recall my M2C having this “issue”. However, it’s possible I just wasn’t being as hypersensitive to the shifting experience in that car. With my hand off the shifter, everything feels perfectly normal. No other vibrations and the car performs as expected. Just this weird extra vibration in 4th.

Mine buzzes (buzzed) in 3rd and 4th during acceleration. I chalked it up to the SSK, 95a bushings, MP shift knob, and just general functions of the transmission. Have had similar experiences with my Infiniti (vibrations but no noise) and other RWD cars so I've come to accept it as normal as long it's not excessively rough.

That said, it does seem to be intermittent and during my last two drives, I felt little to no additional 4th gear vibration. I'm just going to chalk up to normal drivetrain behavior, exaggerated by the stiffer bushings/shifter.

Im the originator of this thread I still have the car now sitting at 15k miles. Issue is still present and hasn’t gotten worse or better. Every time I come in for service I make sure my SA notes it on the RO so there is a record of it on going. I had the shop foreman take it for a drive with me and while he noticed the issue he chalked it up to normal. I’m kind of at a cross roads because while I could probably push for a new trans, do I really want that big of a job performed for a minor issue? I figure as I get closer to the end of my warranty ill decide my future with the car and if I’ll really push for a replacement or not.

Any update on this? I noticed a noise from the car + constant vibration/wobble in the shifter - most noticeable at low speeds. It is not RPM pending - it's speed / driveshaft spin pending.
