2020 Tune Story

Back in Feb-March I decided it was time to get my S55 tuned.

Knowing I had a 5/19 build and not wanting to pull the DME and ship it I started looking for Tuners who could unlock it and install a tune the same day.

My first roadblock was COVID-19. Nobody could see me until their state relaxed business lockdowns.

My 2nd problem was finding a ECUTEK tuner who also would unlock my DME.

After tons of poor communication with 2 of the 3 ECUTEK tuners listed in the Northeast (2 CT & 1 NYS) I decided to take my car to AMR Performance in Danbury, CT.

I setup the appt hauled my ass down there (380 miles RT) and had them proceed. By 3:00 PM they had given up as ECUTEK said they couldn't support my car. They promised me that if I came down again the following week all would be good.

I again went down a 2nd time, and again they couldn't get the ECUTEK tune installed. I was so frustrated at this point I told them to install their own tune on my car. I was already out a bunch of cash at this point.

Well their tune was powerful, up to 23.8 lbs of boost but it came on early and hard and the throttle setup sucked. Within 1/4-1/2 inch of throttle the car was almost fully on power. Their tune had no interface to make adjustments with and I quickly decided to see if ECUTEK would help me out directly.

They apologized about all the problems and offered me the "flashpoints" to get the tune done. Well thanks but then they said I needed their Retail Programming kit as well and then back again to a ECUTEK tuner.

Nope to much of a hassle at this point!

So I dropped more money on a BM3 OTS tune.

I went to install the tune and it kept failing. I was able to get BM3 to remote in and finally we both figured out it was my AK Motion Display blocking access to the Port. I turned it completely off and bamn! I had a OTS Stg 2 93 pump tune on the car. So much better in both throttle modulation and power delivery thru the RPM's. Its down a little in power vs the AMR tune but worlds better for smoothness, etc.

Somewhere in the future I'll have a custom tune done on the car, but am very happy with getting rid of the damn burbles and making adjustments to a few other items.

Last, just a day before I got the BM3 tune on my car my AK Motion Display detected a max boost reading of 30lbs on the AMR tune. That prompted the quick purchase of the BM3 OTS tune.

I'm not bashing AMR, my AK Motion Display had to have been the problem but why they didn't figure that out I have no idea.

So am quickly looking forward to a few track days in July now on my other set of rims and tires. I should be able to put all this power down nicely with them mounted....

I've used ECUTEK on my EVO X and really was impressed by it. It just wasn't in the cards this time!

So you did or did not have your DME flashed to run the BM3?

Guessing they unlocked it to do the original ECUtek attempt? How does the power feel on the BM3 93 octane, worlds different than stock?

Yes its about 4-5lb of additional boost. Put puts the power down much better than the AMR custom tune.

Last night a S5 was in front of me on the on ramp to the local hgwy,

I walked up his ass twice quickly I might add...

I don't trust shop branded custom tunes, especially ones that aren't through MHD/BM3/EcuTek.

Seems like Bend Calibration is the only half decent EcuTek tuner.
