I'll add my .02 on the M2 vs M4...

Drove both, on track. Unless you do autocross events or frequent smaller, low speed tracks, it's not in the same class as the M4. Period. It's WAY down in power. Test an M4 around town at a stoplight or highway you will get embarrassed.

So besides being the newest kid in the BMW family I just don't see what the hype is about. If the M2 was priced in the low 40's I think it would be a better option. But at the current price point I'd take a stripper M4 over the M2 every time.

Super easy to cherry pick favorable times and videos.
Yup, super easy to cherry pick and compare apples to oranges .

In that same actual test where the M4 GTS did the 1:40.4 (Autocar Best Driver's car), the M2 did a 1:44.4, a whopping 4.0 seconds slower than the GTS .

Talking

Great... More M2's for people who appreciate the car for what it is.

so was it a 135is or a 135i with a DCT swap? The DCT never came on a 135i.
It did in Canada. Maybe thats where he is.

You could get the DCT is the states as well on the 135i (and not just the 135is) the last several years combined with n55 engine in it.

I've noticed that Carwow seems high on acceleration times for most cars

Car and driver seems to achieve the best acceleration times on all cars in fact.

Acceleration metrics can become quite confusing. American publication usually exclude a one-foot roll-out for acceleration times (as per NHRA guidelines) while European publications don't, this is worth ~0.3 seconds. Further, European publication usually publish 0-100km/h (0-62mph), even UK publications often show 0-62mph instead of 0-60mph, this is worth another ~0.3 seconds. Also, C&D correct their acceleration numbers for ambient, which can skew the numbers further.

I’ll try and find it. Someone in the M2 forum did the math based off of all the numbers coming from the test runs and spy videos.

But honestly what are you expecting from a 400hp car and a detuned stock S55. 35-40 extra horses is not much (widely reported now).

Take the best 0-60 M2 (4.2) numbers out there and take a couple of ticks off of it and you have the CS. ( If you want to talk past 100mph then there’s an argument)

Were you expecting a 3.2sec 0-60 M2?

I think its impressive that the M2 was first off the line and ahead for the early sprint, maybe to 45 or 60 MPH. Most roads wont get you to reach those high high speeds where the upper Ms shine. If any thing this could make me consider the M2 as a decent M car after all. That said, would probably go M3 to get 4 doors and more cabin

Watching the video and reading through the thread reminds me of what I went through when I started my search for an M2. I figured for the money asked, I should get the options I wanted vs grab whatever was available. Unfortunately, I didn’t want a Laguna blue with manual....which seems to be mostly what is around.

So then I started looking at CPO M4s but they are just too physically large for my tastes and handle more like a grand tourer than I wanted. For the same money I could have a new Corvette C7. So that’s basically what I did. I also decided to keep my beloved 135is DCT with Dinan S2 tune. I’ve also put better Michelins on it, and that really improves the handling. I also picked up a Corvette C7 which surprised me since it’s about the same size as an M2 and drives wonderfully. So I consider my 135is my poor man’s M2 since with the tune it has about the same HP but more torque. It doesn’t go around a track as well, but I don’t track my cars anyway.

Is this stubby 135i the cut-price M2 CS we have been looking for?:

The base price of the M2 is $52K. The base price of the 2006 Z4 M Roadster was $53k. The point you are tying to make is perplexing. You drive a 10 yr old BMW, of course your going to save money by not buying a brand new $60k M2. Your also saving money by not buying a $16k Honda Fit, what's your point?

Wink

I'd expect it to be quicker, not the same, unless they've used different gearing to slow it down.

I don’t know. I just can’t see it being faster than the M4 CS or GTS. And it seems like some of the expectations people have are putting it right up there.

BMW has been very good about keeping their M cars separated.

I could be wrong. But even if I wasn’t a $700 tune would open the S55 right up.

I love seeing posts like this because it progresses the discussion.
If you've owned M cars before, the current M3/M4 is disappointing. I know many people who ended up selling theirs and going back to the e9x. It's frustrating to see that BMW had to come out with the CP package just to correct all the issues with the first version. If I already didn't own an e36, I would definitely have gotten a M2. Small, fun, and nimble. The car is everything the e36 and e46 was and more.
Speak for yourself. I've owned E93 M3 and F10 M5, and still think my current F80 is my favorite.
