Crazy times!!! Empty dealer lots and high prices.
Had to get some warranty work done on the ‘vert and this is what the sales floor looked like today at a high volume dealership in the Chicago ‘burbs. Even the lot was void of new cars. Even the ugly ones!!!
Also while there my SA offered up that they just gave a guy $7k over MSRP on trade for his 2020 M2C with 900 miles. Sold it in two days. I’ll have to work him a little bit to find the selling price. Last edited by IcewaterPete; 10-21-2021 at 07:50 PM.. |

Pretty bizarre right?
Think about it, if the dealer gave the guy $69K, how much did they sell it for? $75K?

That's my dealership, I drive by it at least once or twice a week. I need to get my maintenance done soon…..didn't go inside since the spring. Wow.

Its crazy how much worse things have gotten. My closest dealers who usually have a 100-200 new cars in inventory each, are down to 30-50, which is really low for them.

Crazy times.
I was at the Toledo BMW dealer today getting a tail light replaced today and their showroom had a 2 series grand coupe, X3 and X4. Not the usual M8, X7 or other high end show cars. |

It's just getting worse, the cars we are getting in are being stripped of options.
No heads up displays no lumbar support on passenger sides. Newest one I saw was 2 series GC not getting adaptive LED headlights or adaptive cruise control even as an option anymore. The list of unavailable things is getting longer and longer |

Here's the selection of cars at my local BMW dealer. Only 1 new X7 and barely any used cars. The parking lot is usually filled with cars. I have never seen it so empty. It's the same story as nearly every other dealer too. No new cars at VW, Mercedes, Mini and Lexus all nearby as well.

I'm not denying it, although I'm more optimistic in general. Actually I'm more 'optimistically cautious'.
However, I am curious of other people's takes on this: what do you think it will be like, and why? It makes for good discussion, and we can (hopefully) look back and see who predicted it the best. If using a narrow spectrum of automotive-only glasses, I already got the car that I wanted before car market went nuts, so I am not entirely disappointed. It can be taken as an indicator of prosperity, the amount of cars in a dealership... but it can also be due to people's accumulating boredom over 18+ months coupled with a delay in production of some base items. I would think the delay will recover.

Multiple factors here. COVID shut down factories everywhere, including automotive and others. Many of the auto manufacturers cancelled orders for chips because they were curbing production of cars. Meanwhile, chip manufacturers who themselves were a victim of shut downs etc., saw surging demand from other sectors of the economy like phone manufacturers, servers, and all things related to cloud computing, as virtually all white collar jobs moved online. They shifted focus on the more "reliable" chip consumers and fulfilling those demands. Now auto manufacturers want chips, and guess what? Not so fast
Auto has never been about nimble supply chains for technology, tech figured that out from the onset. So the auto manufacturers are gonna be at the back of the bus for a bit. Luckily, I dont need a car either, but for someone who genuinely does, this is a really bad time. I think that by 2Q 2022, we'll start to see a sense of normalcy in chip supply, and in another years time we'll see dealer lots flooded with catch up inventory and good deals to be had. That's my guess, based on no scientific analysis |

I agree, this problem is far bigger than automotive... the automotive problem is very specific to chips but the supply chain on everything is screwed-
1) People don't want to work for low wages anymore with sky rocketing prices. 2) Covid shutdowns 3) Port slow downs 4) Major trucking issues 5) Outsourcing everything to one major country Really have no idea how we dig ourselves out of this one... I don't think Covid caused remotely the problems that we are seeing today.
