REAR track pads / MIXED pad set-ups

Hi guys,

I will be tracking my car this year and wondered if you guys could help with the following?

If running dedicated front track pads (for example; RS29’s) could you still run the rear OEM pads and be OK? (bearing in mind rear braking accounts for approx. 25% of your total braking force).

If not, would running a fast road pad in the rear OK instead? Such as Ferodo 2500 or EBC yellow?

Keen to know what experience people have with mixed pad set ups please.

Thank you 😊

I wouldn't run street pads on the track, even if they are just on the rear. The potential for them to quickly wear down and damage your rotors is still a possibility.

I personally run Ferodo DS1.11's in the front, and DS2500's in the rear on the track. This provides a pretty even brake feel and wear appears to be about the same.

As a bonus, you can run the DS2500's on the street as they aren't very noisy, and they are the same compound as the 1.11's, so theres no need to rebed the pads when you swap them out if you run the DS2500's on the street (all 4 corners).

The DS2500's however likely arent enough brake to run in the front for track day, hence the reason for the 1.11's.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your advice and yes, I've seen a huge number of threads saying DS2500's simply aren't good enough upfront.

I would be swapping out the front track-pads post-session, so would have to put the standard rears back in too.

Nathan,

On my F20 m135i I ran mixed oem pads as follows:-

F2x MPBBK pads at the back and F8x M4 sport pads upfront

Above worked a treat for DD and occasional TD's. Fronts would squeal a tad after too much light duty but a swift beasting soon shut them up again.

Shouldn't be a problem. I run 1.11 up front and 2500 rear. Fronts do most of the work, provided you're disabling DSC.

Thank you, this is likely what I'm planning.

And it's more convenient because you're only swapping on one axle.

So you guys leave the 2500's in the rear but switch back to OEM pads on the front?

I thought you'd swap front and rear's both back to OEM after track, no?

Run 2500's on all 4 corners instead of OEMs for the street. The pad compound is similar enough to the DS1.11's that no bedding is required between track/street.

Suggestions for vendors on the Ferrodos? Use Rennstore for Pagids, but no source for Ferrodo.

I use carbotech xp20 front and xp12 rear

They're a noisy on the street. But are completely fade proof with rbf600.

I also run ds2500’s in 4 corners for daily then Put Ds1.11’s up front for track days. For winter right now I’m running the factory pads, but they are very soft in performance versus ds2500, and I don’t like the feel of them anymore compared to ds2500. I was hoping to just use them up (60 percent left) but in winter on the street there’s very little of wear anyways, So I’ll be just putting the ds2500 in and leaving them in full time except for track days. I didn’t realize how much better ds2500 was until I went back to stock pads.

Just a word of caution on ds1.11, even though they are really good track pads, but if you try and use the ds1.11 on street they will squeal loudly every single time you apply them, even just lightly touching the pedal. Like garbage truck squeal. I even had guys pull up beside me telling me I should change pads as it sounded as they were down to steel on steel.

I was departing Bakersfield towards Buttonwillow for a track day with my 1.11s in and came to a 4-way stop with a truck stopping on the other side. Pretty sure the noise from the 1.11s was louder than his brakes which would explain the odd look on his face.

Make sure you clean brake surfaces - to clear baked on brake dust deposits off - with harder race pads before putting yr stock pads back in.

No problem.

I run PFC08 up front and Hawk HPS 5.0 in rear.

Switch the PFC’s out for the front Hawk’s once track day is done
