No disrespect to anyone however knocking, clunking, clicking and poping are all different noises and are subjective to person posting. Using one term over another will get different responses. For instance knocking people will gravitate to something loose or top hats, poping for end links and clicking something internal to the shock as an example.
So all I'm saying is try to be prescriptive and be open to issue lying outside of the shock however being induced by the shock. I for one understand how frustrating it can be when you don't know what the actual noise is and chasing your tail forever wondering if it is normal or not.

However, I don't think the general discussion is useless, because it gives others (and myself) ideas of what to try to fix or replace. I think the best course of action for anyone is to gather a list of possible solutions, list them in order from cheaper/easiest to most expensive, and run down the list until the noise stops. Right now, myself, and maybe others are a bit like chickens with their heads cut off until there are enough opinions and thoughts to make a list like I mentioned. I'm giving my car to my mechanic to install a DP in the next week or so. While there, I'm having him replace the top hat bolts, the carrier nut and bolts, the stiffening plate bolts, and check torque on the front axle supports. If one of these fixes the issue, I'm not gonna know which it was or take the time to find out, because they are all simple to replace. But if it does fix my issue, it will give others an idea of what to try. Top Hat Nut x2 - 34339806226 $3.52/ea Shock Carrier Bolt x2 - 07119905418 $4.79/ea 56Nm Shock Carrier Nut x2 - 33326768884 $1.79/ea 56Nm Stiffening Plate Bolts x8 - 33326768354 $3.31/ea 56Nm + 90 Degree rotation Actually, I just looked through my order and forgot to buy the top hat bolts. So I won't have him replace them this time because I don't want to pay for shipping or wait for them to arrive. BTW, here's a pdf I was sent with diagnosis repair procedure for Front Axle Steering Noise Elimination. Other than the carrier bolts and stiffening plate bolts, it also recommends to check front axle support bolts are torqued to 19Nm. Then goes to Lubricating the wheel bearing if those three fail to resolve the issue. |

Update on my situation:
Vorshlag did not find anything wrong with the camber plate and noted that a dealer used alternative camber plates, dinan, GC, and vorshlag with the same noise. They believe it is something that seems to be dampened by the stock top hat but not any of the other camber kits. Here is a video of the noise when the shock is compressing. The louder noises are from the jack going up and down from the center point, but the softer noise is coming from the shock assembly area. I am stumped as stock top hats are virtually noise-free but with the camber kit installed more than once to confirm proper fitment, it makes this noise.

Well, replaced the stiffening plate bolts, strut carrier bolts, and tightened the axle supports and still have the same sound. We actually tightened the carrier bolts 1/4 turn past torque spec and the creaking got a little quieter. So my mechanic seems to think the tolerance on my KW V3's is a little off. Which, I bought them NIB off of the classified section here, so I got no warranty.

Just chiming in that my Ohlins are noooisy. I have two separate things - "clunking" when at slow speeds /wheel turned / going up an incline/decline. Second is ticking noises when going over bumps. I was told that the ticking noises are because the cup that the suspension sits in is steel whereas the ohlins are aluminum so it makes a noise and you have to grease it every once in awhile. Haven't greased it yet.

Interesting thread. I have MPS. I have what sounds like a loose back box hitting the subframe or chassis when coming off speed humps and/or corrugated sections of road. BMW are investigating whether this is the rear shocks, the rear top mounts, or something else as - apparently - it isn't the the exhaust. Even though it stops doing it after the first few miles...
Update: New rear dampers required. Last edited by M Fifty; 08-29-2019 at 03:16 PM.. |

I had Ohlins installed 2 weeks ago on my M2C. I got notified by my installer that the dealer will now be rushing some parts to repair the front shocks because 5 sets were recently installed onto M2/M2C by my installer, and 4/5 (other than me) reports that they make noise in slow speeds and parking speed. The installer noted that the noise is more noticeable if you have DCT, and my car is 6MT.
Apparently Ohlins had updated from the bottom metal bushing to the top copper colored bushing and that's the cause of this low speed noise. So now the 5 sets will be rebuilt, using the old style bushing.

ashtaron14 thanks for the info. What type of noise was it making at slow speeds?
Also I don't see how transmission choice affects the noise besides a bit of added weight.
