The M2 driver went into quite a few turns badly and didn’t seem to be pushing the car to the limit... I heard tires squealing in many of the 1le turns, where as I heard almost none in the M2 turns and on skinnier tires! M2 driver could probably spend a weekend at the track and get 10,000 miles out of some PSS driving like that. 1-day at the Concourse and I nuked an almost new set of PSS by comparison squealing on many turns.
I’ve driven both and the M2 feels like a go-cart by comparison. Just my $0.02 |

My previous car was a Camaro SS.
From the driver’s seat, the Camaro feels faster than my M2C. The instant torque down low is quite addicting with the pushrod V8. The sound is a huge plus also. But the difference in feel of the rest of the car is night and day. I’m very happy with the switch. |

The M2 takes off the line immediately and aggressively, with a lot of audible and tactile fanfare but it blows its load quickly and loses all of it's steam, at higher speeds and RPMs.
Blame this on the limitations of the N55, which it's single turbo setup and insufficient HPFP potential. The N55 initially was never really designed for brunt, continuous powered applications. This is why the S55 in the M2C is so appealing; same great package, with a engine that has more potential headroom. Remember, the M2's N55 shares the same motor as your hypothetical aunt or uncle's '35i, that they uses to go to work and pick up the kids from school with. It was never an engine that was constructed in mind, for straitline, heavy-duty street racing but more so, a powerplant with a thicker torque curve, for those that wanted something above the typical 4 cylinder offerings, with a smoother operation, since 6 cylinders need not work as hard as is boosted as heavily as a 4, to produce the same output. A typical stock N55 in a '35i, the boost pressure is at 7 PSI, its practically running at naturally-aspirated power, with the turbo charge as supplement, when needed. The N55 in M2 on the other hand, stock, is already pushing 15 PSI, double that of a standard N55 application, as it's heavily dependent on its single turbo, the same way BMW's 4 cylinder offering is juiced up (22 PSI), to achieve its lofty power goal. The only thing that really mechanically separates the M2 from a run-of-the-mill '35i vehicle is it's slick electronic M LSD, pistons from the S55 and oil distribution system, with better oil pan baffles, so it doesn't starve for oil, at high G maneuvers. The M2 being blessed with a proper limited slip differential, which puts down power so well, allows BMW to crank up the power, all the way up to the limitations of the N55. It's a car that some might say has more handling than power. BMW tried to make up for the N55's lack of top-end potential, by heavily juicing the motor, even adding a temporary "overboost" function, which spiked the boost pressure, for a brief period, which added some pep, without overwhelming the limitations of the motor. However, there is only so much that they could of accomplished, when the overall hardware remains the same, which is the root of the motor's inherent shortcomings. TL : DR: You got yourself the wrong car if your goal is to race big block motors, from light to light.. Dinan's take on N55's motor in the M2: Last edited by Poochie; 04-14-2020 at 06:15 AM.. |

I've decided in the interest of not degrading the thread any further, I will limit my comment to the following:
I would expect that a stock Camaro V8 would beat a stock M2 in a drag race. No surprise to me.

I've been once and never went back, but I hear a lot of things about Tyler.
BTW is it really possible to gain close to a 100hp from basic bolt-ons and tune? I'm having doubts. I know the N55 responds well to particular modifications but didnt know they responded that well.. |
