Can't decide to place my M2 order or not. HELP!
Ok guys, the time has come after owning 6 bmws, 4 of them being M3's. I love the M4 but I think the car had gotten too big. I love my E36 how small it is. I'm only 5'-6" tall so the smaller the better. My E92 is on the bigger end so I thought to myself "I want to buy a NEW car and custom order it with my options, and maybe it's going to be a M2" So my mind is made up that the M2 is the car I want. It will be my first car I've ever bought new. But I'm in a little dilemma. Here they are:
1. Take on payments of up to $800 for the next 5 years? I'm not even done paying off my E92 yet (but I'm close, a few months away) 2. Can I get the M2 truly in the options I want (exterior color, interior, wheels, etc) 3. Euro Delivery or not? 4. Does anyone feel the car will appreciate or drop in price? So. With that being said I have been in contact with my dealership. I would be in the top 10 in ordering for my area. He said he can't say what position but he said well in the top ten with details of the first car being sold already. So I'm thinking #3-5 if I order. He has written me invoices for a basic M2 dealership delivery and invoice for a Euro Delivery. It's a 5% decrease in price which wouldn't offset the trip money for my wife and I to spend a week in Germany. I'd like to site see a bit too. My seller also advised me that only 300 M2's were being imported this year. That's a very small number. While I have read threads saying BMW will NOT be offering Individual colors, but, my seller said send him a list of colors I'm interested in and BMW will see if they can do it or not but BMW is open to doing optional colors other than the 4 offered. My seller said he contacted the factory direct and that's what they told him. Affording the car is not a problem, it's pulling the trigger. I'd be MORE interested if I can get an Individual Color option, with matching interior stitching, and Euro Delivery before I'd say a 100% yes. What would you guys do in my situation? Mike

How the hell does your dealer know how many M2s are coming to US this year? Also, there won't be an individual color option for M2. Your dealer sounds like total BS to me. I would try my chances somewhere else.

1. Payments--very hard to answer this without knowing your financial situation. Money is cheap now, so your rate is going to be good regardless, but what kind of chunk $800/month takes out of your budget only you know. If it is a stretch, perhaps two M cars might be enough in the short term.
2. Another advantage in waiting is that the future may well offer more flexibility with respect to the "options" you want than the present does. Because now, for example, in the US you can get any color you want outside, so long as it's LBB, MG, BSM or AW. Period. And any color/material you want inside, so long as it's black Dakota leather with blue contrast stitching. This car is very, very limited on options here right now. 3. ED would be cool, all else being equal. But if that would be a net financial burden for you, with travel and related costs figured in, then again that's something between you and your bank accounts/conscience. 4. Very much doubt this car will appreciate substantially any time in the next several years, if BMW goes through with its apparent plans to make a version of it for five more years (yet another reason not to jump too soon to get the car). This will not be the 1M, and even that car has not appreciated wildly, but simply stayed closer than normal to holding its original value. Separately, your dealer is almost certainly talking out of his ass, sad to say, regarding options, total volume the first year to the US, etc. I've talked to several dealers and none of them have repeated anything like what he is saying, and it is also quite inconsistent with other reports on this Board. In my experience, dealers are not a real good source of information on this kind of thing, and they are even worse about the car itself. It's a rare sales associate who actually knows as much as any prospective buyer could learn about a car in 30 minutes on the Net. I am repeatedly surprised at how clueless these people are about the details of the cars they sell. I've heard tales of real enthusiasts as sales associates, but the only real enthusiasm I sense in the ones I've consulted is for selling me a car, as expensive as possible, and as quickly as they can. And that is just the ones who don't knowingly feed false or speculative information to create a sense of urgency or value to encourage snap decisions and purchases. So this is what the email says:
Hello Michael, You can schedule a Euro Delivery for the new M2 which would be priced at 5% less than a USA port of Entry vehicle. I called the Factory and they said that if you want a special color you have to request what color and they would let us know if it is possible and how much. It would also delay delivery since there are only a little over 300 available for the USA. Have a great day! I do not want to list the employee name or area of the dealership to not throw anyone under the bus. Also I attached the Euro Delivery List sheet with pricing so I see they are not trying to do any price gouging which is good. Also for the financial part, I make 6 figures and my debt to income ration is really low and my credit score is roughly 740 so I'm banking on a decent APR% Do we know for sure that BMW is planning on 5 years of these cars? My E92 is fine but creeping on 130k miles with almost flawless unplanned maintenance. Also in the future my wife will be driving and she wants a Z4M. So dilemmas everywhere. Typically people that are interested what is your average acceptable payment? Are people paying $800 for a new car a month or are they saving a ton of money and getting the payments down to $300 a month? I'm just curious.

I've already read that they do not have the capabilities to do Individual colors. I'm trying to get a feel for my sales person. Nothing will beat my experience I had at the BMW dealership in San Jose, California

At least keep the E92 so you know what it feels like to be debt free. For a while, anyway. It's exhilarating! |

That's the big dilemma! I was debt free for 5 years after I paid my E36 off and it felt great! Maybe it's just the M2 hype, the price, etc. So far I'm gathering from replies...the M2 might not be the best idea. Just been pondering this for a few weeks now. I could take the $800 and buy something new for my E92 every month or just save it. I do enjoy my E92 M3. Last of the V8's for the M3 also and last time it will be a true M3 as the number has now changed to M4. Thanks for the advice! It was helpful

Why keep two if it's a financial burden? If you sell the E92 it would be nice down payment on an M2. If you're happy with it, just stop looking at M2 porn and enjoy it a few more years.
What is a reasonable amount of your net worth to be tied up in BMW assets? |

It's not a financial burden at all. It's a matter of "Do I want the financial burden for 5 more years?" I'd use the E92 as a down payment. Just did a calculator and my payment would be max $650 on 3% APR with $15,000 down. From what I read you shouldn't tie up no more than 10% of your income on a car payment. So I'd say I'm tying up about 8% a year. Not bad I guess. And I love M2 porn

I can't stand these BMW dealers in California. I went to steven's creek just to see an M235i to get an idea of the size of the cabin in an M2. and because i wasn't their customer - they didn't want to help. I just needed like a minute of their time. |

Mine was Mountain View BMW. The guy that sold me my E46 M3 was an E46 M3 owner himself and pretty much goes like this. I called him and he said the car was ready come take a look. Meet him by the car. I get there, he comes out, and lobs the keys over to me. I see her has a ///M jacket on. It was my first time with the SMG II tranny. He gives me a 2 second rundown and off we go. As we're driving he told all the features of the car, how fast, top speed and tells me to jump on the highway. I get on the highway and he starts yelling "punch it! Punch it! Come on don't be a sissy!" So I'm getting this damn car and it's up to 140 before I had to slow it down. He was telling me to max it out. Talk about a rush! So needless to say...I bought it on the spot! All I had to do was email him 3 pay stubs and give me license. He did the rest. Best experience ever! My E92 M3 was a different experience...Needless to say...typical salesman, didn't give two shits about me...but did get me the price and financing I wanted. Just a shitty bmw center. I'll never forget my experience with Mountain View BMW. I actually wrote a letter to his boss commending him on his sales tactic. I didn't m entire going 140 just noted he cared about the customer.
