Yes around that temp range is ok for the n55. 270°F is when power is being cut in a silent limp mode.

Just wanted to chime in on this thread for those that didn't note this in my N55 Extreme Engine Cooling thread in the Engine section of the forum.
When I started running Motul 300V (5W-40 for the street, 10W-40 for hot summer track days), I noticed my oil temps running 15-20F cooler in similar driving modes and circumstances vs OEM oil. I also didn't have to add any oil between changes. This was happening with the OEM oil as soon as I started running an E30 mix & tune, while the 300V held up great. The stuff isn't cheap and it's not a long life oil, so you're supposed to change every 3-5K miles, but it works damn good for the track and has way better high temp protection. |

The caveat is it's not an LL oil, so you should change it every 3-5k miles. That's fine for me b/c I don't drive my car much, but if you commute in yours that'll become a pricey oil to use. The other caveat is I'm now running an E50 mix and the 300V 5W-40 was a little too thin for that high of Emix and I started to have to add a quart between changes. With 300V 10W-40 that's not an issue, and while that sounds thick, 300V 10W-40 is thinner than most 5W-40s that guys are putting in their M2/M2C's. I will say it's pretty noticeable how freer rev'ing the engine is and the oil temp impact with 300V. Great stuff! Last edited by ZM2; 09-17-2021 at 10:58 PM.. |

300v is way too expensive and overkill just for 1-3 track days a year. Motul xcess gen 2 5w40 should be more than sufficient for 1-3 track days a year. It has a pretty high hths at 3.8, solid additive package, and Porsche a40 certification which edy has told me is the crazy nurburgring endurance test to see if there oil oil break down. So yes it should be absolutely fine for those occasionally track days, and since it has a decent additive pack it can also go for longer intervals between oil changes. If you track alot more like zm2 does then yeah you should go with an even more stout oil like 300v.

300V is OK, but has to be used on the track more so than not. Additives in 300V are designed to work beat at very high temperature for prolonged period of time. It is basically racing oil which means there will be oxidation too. X-Cess is compromise, but so is M2. It is nit racing car, it is super fun, super capable street car that comes with all those "goodies" like catalytic converters etc. That means one is limited to oil that can work with all that emissions equipment etc. 300V is designed to work in street cars unlike oils like Mobil1 0W30/50 Racing, Valvoline VR1 etc. that have huge amount of ZDDP that actually it is dangerous for emissions equipment. Another really, really good oil for dual street/track use is Mobil1 0W40FS. It has all stuff engine needs on track. High amount of ZDDP, state of the art base stocks. It has HTHS of 3.6, but that is ok. Problem in N/S55 is very high amount of additives and sulfated ash and phosphorus. Now, BMW has probably best PCV system in industry and carbon build up should not be an issue, but this oil is not particularly friendly to direct injection engines. Also, if M2 is under warranty, M1 won't do it. Manufacturers like MB and Porsche thinks that is ok, but amount of SAPS in that oil is just ridiculous. However, that makes also that oil best cleaning oil by far. |

I personally use the OEM Mann hu8011z, this is the same part number they use in the m2 and s55 powered cars minus the m logo.
I'm sure the hu 816x is fine too but the 8011z pn was only a couple cents more so why not to satisfy my ocd.

Interesting, AUDM (2016 Oct) doesn't have any specific viscosity, instead it tells owners to contact relevant service partner... BS...

When it comes to protection, AGAIN, viscosity is irrelevant,HTHS is what matters. He ordered Castrol 0W30, but that is not oil BMW had in mind when they put 0W30 as BMW TPT 0W30 is FE oil with HTHS around 3. Castrol Edge is so called heavy W30 oil with HTHS above 3.5 and possibly very close to LM 5W40. Reason for such high HTHS is really good base stocks Castrol uses in their 0W30. |

Guys,
New Castrol Edge 0W40 is out. According to Castrol it is LL01. But there is dramatic increase in pour point from -60 to -45. That means significantly less PAO. Not sure how HTHS looks now, but based on pour point it doesn't seem as stout as before. |
