Looks like they're rolling it out slowly, so not everyone will see it right away. Completion does say early 2020.

So as long as you are in the US, looks like BMW NA will be waiving your yearly subscription fee of $80.00. But if you paid the $300.00 lifetime fee, looks like your outta luck.

I wonder what Apple has to say about a third party retailer charging an excess premium to access its services

carplay seems like a gimmick to me. I mean if you really need to see google maps just lay the phone down on the guage cluster... boom you have another screen in front of your face with the map and directions.

That's how people used it prior to CarPlay. But thanks to advancements in technology, it is now closer to your line of sight and on a much larger screen.

Nowadays, I would not purchase a new vehicle without it. And luckily, most brands have jumped on board.

Sending and receiving WhatsApp / texts etc is brilliant too. Live traffic on Google Maps is also miles better than any in built device

probably nothing..., real cost is BMW's continuing support cost, which as your electronic age, good luck, they're just going to be like any other manufacturer randomly drop after some iOS version on some continuous rolling window

Thanks, is this really from BMW or are you just goofing on us?
No this is for real not sure if other BMW owners in Australia got the same email as me yet but I had my other BMW in for a warranty claim ( EGR valve faulty) last week and I got a routine questionaire to fill in re the service and any other gripes I had.

My main gripe is local regulations have BMW certified Apps disabled when the car is motion eg TuneIn radio Life360 etc however if you have CarPlay they work! very much a case of double standards.

I also told them like many others on this forum that it is absolutely appalling a luxury car brand has the audacity to charge extra when cars costing under 20k here have it standard. Also had a dig at them saying neither of their main competitors (MB & Audi) charge extra for it why should you?

BTW my X5 has iDrive 5 from the factory which I then updated to iDrive 6 using ESys software

No. Must have iDrive 6 or 7 for Apple Carplay.
Will also work with i Drive 5 which was standard in F15/F16 from July 2016 onwards

The source article notes that this is expected to roll out by early 2020. So it is pretty clear that BMW has to make upgrades on their server side to no longer charge for CarPlay and those changes will be completed by then.

Obviously, if you haven't paid for CarPlay yet, but your trial has expired you shouldn't pay for it and just wait a bit for it to be activated for free (if you need to at all as some have reported it works past expiration without doing anything).

If you recently paid for it I would call and ask for a refund and just wait it out...

The question is why did BMW do this via a press article before they could complete this immediately? Or said another way, why didn't they just announce this once they've completed rolling out free CarPlay? My guess is simple... CarPlay has come up a lot in the sales process and customers have balked at buying due to it. Announcing now and finishing up later allows them to make it easier to sell cars heading into the end of the year. Especially when they are chasing the chance to replace MB as #1 luxury maker in the US.

Does this also mean that Siri eyes free will be enabled when iDrive 7 is configured to use iDrive interface instead of CarPlay. Currently, Siri will not respond to the Steering wheel microphone long press unless it's configured to use CarPlay.

I suppose it depends on what part of the USA one lives in. In North Carolina BMW crushes MB. New BMW's run around here like ants. Not so much for MB. also wondering if MB factors truck sales into their claim of #1 luxury make?

Does anyone know why current 2 and 4 series are excluded from this, reading the autocar article it says the cost will be £235?

Our 2019 X3 was activated in June for ACP, so we have time left, but so far nothing has changed with respect to ConnectedDrive website or in the vehicle. Still shows a renewal of June 2020 with only ability to extend 3 months prior to expiration.

Overall, good move by BMW as only thing I blasted them on in their CS survey.

Seems like it's possible via coding. I'm looking for the same solution...

hit up kubax86 with your VIN. He should be able to enable carplay for you. I did it to my wife’s 2017 X3 with no issue.
