Yep, ONE turbo runs out of boost quicker, when there are two smaller turbos instead, they boost is quicker, due to the smaller need of momentum. That's why having two turbos are special, they're like a tag team working together and not just one working harder.

Despite the claimed extra weight, I definitely don't believe BMW will release a new M and call it "Competition" which will handle worse than the outgoing model. If it does, it would be a total failure on their part. I guess we'll have to wait for the reviews.

Just had a thought.....could this new model be limited in terms of tuning potential? Is BMW really going to release a car at a significantly cheaper price point than the M3/M4 and easily be on par...or even faster with a simple tune? Does this not disrupt the heirarchy of M models?
In the MINI world, the S model shares the same engine as the highest JCW model.....but due to some design changes of the engines and turbo, a tune still can't really put them at the same level. This is all referring to the N18 engine...when I was more involved with that brand. Just a thought. |

I would be surprised if the turbos on this car are the same size as the ones on the M4. Probably be slightly smaller. |

I own an M4 but I agree with you. When M2 first came out, I heard several repetitive comments from many F80/F82 owners regarding the "cheap" interior, lack of M mirrors, CF roof etc. What's under the hood and how the car feels/performs are more important to me. My decision of going with an M4 had nothing to with any luxury items. In fact, I skipped LED headlights, full leather, side/top view cameras etc. I just wanted a car that is very track capable and at the same time "oh shit!" fast on the highway or straight line. Now, there is a chance for me to have the same experience in a smaller, possibly more fun car. Therefore, if BMW put cloth non-M seats, regular non-M mirrors on this car, I wouldn't care one bit. In fact, I sometimes think I could even survive without the music player and the iDrive lol.

The article below mentions what I'm referring to. I believe VANOS was lacking on N54 exhaust side. Long story longer, It makes a twin turbo car more efficient. |

I disagree, I believe they are identical engines other than a software driven de-tune on the M2 Comp. which puts it in slightly lower hp than the M4. A re-tune of the M2 Comp. together with a performance type exhaust, cold air intake and maybe even a catless downpipe will put the M2 Comp at approx. 570 hp.

I don't know about laggier but my M4 did 11.7 @ 121mph in the 1/4 mile with a Dinan stage 2 tune and street tires. And I did not use my launch control feature. Since that run a couple of months ago I've added a Stage 3 so I would hope it might do a little better times.
