I was surprised. I guess I was already paying a BMW tax on my insurance, but my insurance is cheap enough (32 years of clean driving, no credit issues, bundled with my SO's car, our house, an umbrella policy...which is really a cheap peace of mind thing) that it isn't a big concern. Makes me wonder how cheap it would be on a Civic or something...not that I'd get a Civic...

Edit: My SO took delivery of his 530e last month. His insurance went up by $26 a month vs. the 2015 Acura TLX he had. He's being charged more for the new car than I'm paying for the M2C.

I must say I was really surprised as this was the first time I have bought a car and my insurance changed so drastically. Sounds like a new thread...What do you pay for insurance?

You wanna play you gotta pay!

Mine jumped drastically when we bought our Q7 Audi a couple of years ago. Apparently lot of aluminium parts and expensive to fix. And then of course the M2.

This thread reminds me to shop my insurance. Its time

Sarg - the M2C is $86 a month. Comparing insurance rates is a problematic thing since even changing zip codes in the same area can alter rates. The 530e is costing us $104 a month.

When I had the STi I enjoyed it but ever since getting rid of it I haven't looked back. I even had planned to use it as my DD when the M2C arrived but that lasted 2 months. My annoyances with the car just piled up and I quickly traded it in. No regrets at all.
I second this as well. I currently have a 2015 WRX STi Launch Edition and I loved it before I got the M2C. My plan was to daily the STi and have the M2C as a weekend car, especially since winter was coming up when I bought the M2C, but we had a pretty light winter and I barely drove the STi. Now every time I drive the STi, I question why I've kept it around when I have the M2C. Seriously considering getting rid of it.

Extremely cheap by Canadian standards.

I still have my 20 year old WRX. I have to set a reminder to drive it once a month. It's so old and raw and I love the retro experience. There's just no comparison as to which one I'd choose to drive though.

It sounded like a great idea to keep both cars but I found the STi to be redundant and terribly impractical after the M2C arrived. It was funny...I took it on one weekend trip mountain biking and the car was gone two weeks later. I had a few complaints before that but one road trip made the decision easy, especially after spending some time in the M2C.

I'd keep that WRX in my garage! I'm still kind of kicking myself for not getting (and keeping) an STi when they first came to the US. It's nearly impossible to find an unmolested one now.

Is that a bottle of Glenmorangie on the hood/windshield area?

I still have mine as well. Mine is 16 years old and I still enjoy the raw honesty of the car. On the plus side, I know how to fix almost anything on it as well after all this time. I plan to keep it for a long time. I've got 195k on it and it still runs perfectly. Only problem is that I can't garage it so the clear coat is starting to show its age.

Yes. An unmolested GC8 is now in the hen's teeth category. Never touched the boost on this car. Just improved the handling and added four (count 'em, four) braces as this car is only about 1240kg (2730lbs) and bit, erm, "flexible" out of the box.

Bulletproof reliability. It was pretty good on the track too. I ran a 1:12.7 at Wakefield Park on Pirelli road tyres. For context that's the same as a professional driver (I.e., way better than me) got in a magazine road test in a mid 2000s STi. It was a hoot. You could drive to the track blast out some quick laps and drive back. No tyre change required.

Good eye! Yes, when the car turned 18 (drinking age down here) I got it a present.

For insurance you also have to remember the kind of car thats being driven. Yes this is a high performance car, however because this car is also out of the affordable range for many people under the age of 30, you get a lot less people driving it. Not to mention they just didnt make as many.

I was paying more for insurance with my BRZ than i am with the M2 Competition. And thats largley because the BRZ is a cheaper car, that people like to mod, and then crash. The percentage of reckless driving with the BRZ is just higher than the M2 COmpetition, and so that causes rates to go up. Because our car is more rare, and more expensive, its less of a risk because less people are crashing theirs on the road. In the BRZ/86 group, there was at least 2-3 reported crashes every single day.

Random thought: Been slogging away at work this week, and also stuck at home. No drives last couple of days because its been cold and rainy, but today the sun was shining so out came the M.

I love this car. If you love to drive, this car is for you. That 45 minutes was pure therapy in the beautiful sun, and that howling engine! At least I don't have to worry about touching anything unsanitary, just me in my box enjoying this little pleasure, before they don't even allow us out. Be safe everyone!

It has been raining and flooding here, but weather here was insane yesterday. Destroyed the record high with temps in the 80's. Wife wanted to go to the local park to go for a walk and finally get out of the house. On the way back I turned towards the highway and she asked what I was doing. I told her you don't take a car like this out to drive 35 MPH through town. Had a nice run down the on ramp and a little power slide coming off the off ramp! I love this car!

Took her out yesterday to grab some groceries (what the store actually had). This car makes going to the grocery store fun! Planning on taking another therapy drive today. This car is going to go through rear tires like crazy.

one bad snow day (if you experience those) will have you missing the STi, I regret selling mine now and plan to add one back to the stable.

the m2 is no comparison, obviously, but it is also the worst car I have ever had for winter driving lol.

Where do you live that you can drift your way to the store? I'd be taking out pedestrians, stray cats, and parked cars if I tried something like that

My normal thought process when driving the car.

"Hmm. It's not very far, i probably shouldn't take the freeway"

"maybe i'll just drive past the onramp. See if its clear"

"Oh it's clear! Well, maybe just a little bit of power oversteer...."

"WOOOOHHH!!! POWER!!!!! Now lets hit triple digits!!! Yeah!!!....Wait...where was I going again? ahh fuck it, who cares"

Either way IIWII.

This is probably the easiest rwd car I've driven in snow. The E-diff and small footprint makes it much easier than the previous cars. Tires make a difference as well.

But yes if you're used to AWD it will take time to adjust.
