Winter tires

I was wondering what tires people are running this winter. I know that technically it is too cold for the stock summer tires.

I am not a skier so snow tires are not necessary. Just looking for a good cold weather rain tire. I was thinking about getting Michelin A/S 3+ tires. But reviews say they are quite noisy.

I don't think those would be noisier than the PSS but you sure have some shitty roads in Seattle.

What about Continental DWS? I know the brand gets a bad reputation because of the OEM tires that came with some M2s but DWS is completely different animal.

I ran DWS06 on my last car, which was 400+hp and RWD. They were good in the wet, and even got me home in some unexpected snow. I did a couple late season track days on them as well. I’d run them again.

I put 18" Pirelli Sotto Zeroes Serie 3 on last winter with some cheap wheels. Great in the rain and/or cold. Not any extra noise that I’ve noticed. Haven’t seen snow. These are performance winter tires as opposed to full on snow tires, but they carry the three peaks symbol. I’m pretty happy with them. Doesn’t drive like a snow tire with the squirmy tread.

If you plan to use the stock wheels, looks like the DWS and AS3+ are among just a few options in stock sizes, but if you’re considering wheels as well, a square 245/40r18 set will be cheaper and partially offset the wheel cost.

I ran Michelin A/S 3+'s on my 340ix when I had it. They were pretty darn good it simple cold and rain, and simply OK in what snow we got during the couple of winters I was running them. I'm running Michelin Alpin's on 641M wheels and they are just absolutely great on cold, wet roads. Actual winter tires will be better even if Portland and Seattle don't actually get any snow. They will give you better stopping distances at 35 degrees than all-seasons will, and if either of our towns DOES get snow they will be very, very worth it.

A good set of all seasons, IMO.

Those michilin's A/S are not that noisy. I have them on my challenger and haven't really had a complaint about them.

I am looking at the Alpin PA4 too.
Unfortunately they are not available anymore on tire rack or discount tire.

Where did you get yours?

I take my 4s's off for the winter and put on my Conti DWS's on my M2. Also use them on my 95' GSX (Eclipse) and my M2 for the limited driving I do in my M2 in the winters. I have Mich Alpin's for winter on my 335xi.

They came on the 641M Winter set I bought from Kuni BMW. The whole wheel/tire package ended up being less than Tire Rack's offering with shipping (I got a bit of deal on the set).

I live in BC but am down in WA often. We also get the same weather as you guys. I ran XICE3 on my other cars and never had issues. This year i'm running Conti WinterContact TS830P which are on BMW 640M winters. For a winter tire they handle very well and I had no issues going up a local mountain for skiing. Apparently these are similar to the Alpin PA4's being labeled as a "performance winter"

This video just happened to come up in my YouTube feed. With UK winter conditions being fairly similar to here, his conclusion seemed relevant to us as well.

https://youtu.be/bKtnczk8Mxk

If you don’t want to watch, conclusion is to use a summer tire in the summer, and an all season tire in the winter for best all around dry and wet performance with some ability in the off chance we get snow, but better in cold and wet, non-snowy conditions that we’re most of the winter season driving in.

I bought this package from the dealer with the Alpin PA4s:

https://www.shopbmwusa.com/PRODUCT/6...---TIRE-SET-XL

The front and rear tires/wheels are identical: 235/35R19 91 XL

Question: the dealer is telling me the Alpin PA4 235/35R19 is no longer available.

Is this TRUE?? Tell me they're full of shite.

I run Michelin Alpins 245/40/18. Better than AWD vehicles with All Season tires. I'm in the NorthEast, lots of ice and snow.

Reviving this thread. Have you guys put on winter tires already?

I similarly won't be driving through snow but I know I shouldn't be driving with summer tires when it's too cold. I've read that the crossover point is 44F. Recently it's been staying above that. Sometimes it dips into 42 or 40 but still close to 44. Right now it's 35F in Seattle which sort of triggered me to maybe buy winters and put them on. But looking at the weather ... the next week is still going to be high 40s and sometimes reaching into 50.

Not sure what to do!

I have gone three years now with my summers all year round. Just don’t drive it in the rare snow days. In the cold just be aware that your stopping distance will increase and don’t push the corners.

Thanks for that info. Do you park the car indoors?

The other variable for me is that I unfortunately need to park outdoors and I've heard that the summer tires have a threshold where if it gets too cold the tires can crack and get damaged. I need to remind myself what that temperature is and check whether the overnight temps dip that low. If for nothing else, I may need to swap the tires out just for that.

I park outside. We live in a house built have no garage. I never have had a problem with cracking from cold.

I ran the Pirelli Sottozero 3 last year, real pleased with dry/cold performance. Like the person above, they don't feel like a snow tire.

I don't put them on until the first day I have to drive in the snow and with this year working from home exclusively, the M2 stays in the garage. I may never bother mounting them, although I do need an excuse to take the M2 out, it seems to be sitting for weeks.

I ran 641's with Alpin 4's for two winters, and both of those were snow free down here in Portland (well, there was snow for a minute, and I made a point of driving over the only little clump I could find...don't think that counted, though). The 641's performed GREAT in the cold/rain weather I ran them in, and we're quite, um, strange if I didn't get them off the car before we approached 60 degrees. The cold mornings/warm afternoons in late winter/early spring interesting as my two wheel sets were both wrong depending on the time of day.

I ended up with three sets of wheels so I sold the 641's and I have DWS 06's on my 788's to see how good of a PNW compromise they are. I have a thread in the wheel/tire section where I plan on jotting down my notes about them as they break in and I drive through what Portland throws at us this year. I've used A/S 3+'s before so this is basically a $1000 experiment to keep me amused.

since you were running the Alpin 4 already, why did you put chains on? Were the snow tires not capable in the conditions you faced?
