They designed the engine that way and chances are they aren't going to be able to change the exhaust routing without affecting the factory design.

There's only so much they can sound tune. People make it louder with aftermarket stuff but it still sounds very raspy and empty

There are aftermarket full length exhausts out there for the M3/4 that combine the exhaust routing to make a better sound, but still falls short when the revs go high.

With what we have seen from the test cars, the S55 sound remains.
I don't actually think the S55 sounds that bad since ZCP. When the S55 first appeared in the F8x - yikes that sounded like....you know.

Oh I miss my long departed S65. That engine/induction sound.

I guess will see soon enough.

Regarding the criticism of the S55 sound: A few days ago an F80 M3 was in front of me on the motorway... and it really sounded horrible... it was like a tin can combined with farts. I have not heard an S55 in "reality" until that moment but now I can absolutely confirm the criticisms and I hope that the S55 in the M2 Competition will sound better.

Was it a ZCP? The difference is dramatic.

It really is - I am gradually warming up to my ZCP sound, and I think it's because the exhaust note is getting better with time. It's not perfect by any means, and it's not addictive the way the F6 in my 981 was, but it's growing on me.

Lovely Q&A, let's wait and see how much is correct from that list when the car lands...

This is 100% the cause. I suspected this right away after hearing the car. It effectively sounds like equal length headers from 3 cylinders. Full length headers would certainly add more character to it. I haven't really seen this as as popular mod yet. But you'd have to think that's the first thing you need to do to this motor.

Not sure about the routing on the M2. Without the full equipment list from the F8x and maybe with a different engine compartment there may have been a revision from the F8x header.

Since this Competition will replace the M2, I can't say it's the "affordable" M car anymore. One can only wonder how much more expensive the future M3/4 will be...

This thread is a sticky now, at least until the official M2 Competition release.
