It's the rear diff that is the issue during break in. At 1200 miles it will be good but the special dirty break in oil needs to come out before you start railing on it.

I've posted before - the 1,200 number is not magical - going a few hundred below or above would be no big deal in the real world.
However, the OP is correct -it doesn't take much for BMW to deny a warranty claim and it would suck if they did because "you brought the car in 200 miles past..." on another note, I was going to buy a M3 once (long time ago) and my dealer ran the numbers and saw that the guy had gone like 3,000 miles past the 1,200 mile mark. Passed on that car!

I also spent a couple of years working in an IMSA GTP factory team dyno. We broke in motors prior to the races. These were hand built motors with tighter tolerances than massed produced cars and more expensive components and yet they were carefully broken in. We then filter the used oil and look for metal particles as there were a lot of them. |

and as far as BMW recommended break-in procedures - well, I won't start that argument - I mean "discussion" here

Exactly.
No one chimed in on my question. Does the dash indicate that service is due at 1200 miles??? My service indicator shows service due in 10,000 miles on my new car. The break in period is hardly even highlighted in the manual. Critical event? Hardly. If it were, BMW would highlight it much more dramatically. |

Otherwise it is no different from an M235i!! iirc the only major difference is the M235 does not have an M diff and no 1200 BI service requirement! Nothing "magical" happens at the 1200 mi break except for launch control being enabled for DCT vehicles |

This goes away after you have your 1,200 miles service done.

I did PCD. Since it was 1700 miles from there back home, I asked if that would be a problem, and they told me explicitly "Yes." They said 1500 miles was the absolute hard limit, and that BMW could void the warranty if that was exceeded. I arranged with a dealer on my route (BMW of Lincoln, NE) to do the service during my drive home. I was at 1210 when I got to the dealership, and they had me in and out of there in 90 minutes.

On a side note, the Nav vehicle info did state the 1200 mile service too. |

Bet you won't find it. Because they can't deny and/or terminate your warranty just because you didn't service the car at 1,200 miles.
However.... In the event of an issue with the differential or a component of the engine that is lubed with oil, they could deny that claim. Kind of like the Dinan stuff - BMW covers everything not touched by Dinan and Dinan covers the rest.

If you go past 1500, the car is no longer valid for the certified pre owned program, warranty becomes non-transferable, and I think ruins the warranty on the diff.

My car is a March 2017 build. No break in indicator. Indicates service in 10,000 miles. I don't think anything in the manual refers to a service either. Perhaps BMW changed the requirement. |

Also must say that I've checked the diagnostic screens and they indicate no issues and no service required. Pretty weird, right? |

More so in the electronic owners manual that I just downloaded for my car on the BMW Driver's Guide iPhone app, clearly states "Breaking-in period" which goes on to indeed tell you 1200 miles. Last edited by McPurrs; 07-11-2017 at 08:32 AM.. |
