In the United States please check out www.safercar.gov to get detailed information on any safety related recall information. It's the best resource and avoids rumor.

You need to have had your diff replaced already before you can join this recall

So make sure your shop does it right when you go in for the swap so you, like me, don't have to go back again.

Isn't this the same recall we already knew about regarding botched rear diff replacements? I think they just started notifying people this week but it doesn't affect those who haven't had their rear diff replaced yet. (someone correct me if I'm wrong though)

If this recall is only for those that had the rear diffs replaced why does the recall campaign letter state model years 2015-2017 are effected? I thought the diff recall was supposedly only MY16 cars built between a small date range thus far?

It wasn't. The diff recall goes way deeper than anyone thinks, it's well over 10,000 cars affected worldwide.

Read the main Bimmerpost thread about the diff replacement. Information on VIN, regions, lists, etc., were all there.

I have read the entire tread. Do you claim 10k+ cars based on that tread?

Consider that around half of the 2016 M2 run was affected as well as the first part of 2017 run. That's roughly 1 year of production, and around 750-1000 M2 appear to be trickling out of the factory for each model year.

The M3 and M4 were also affected, as well as regular line 5 and 6 series cars and the M5 and M6.

Do you have an alternate suggestion or just skeptical and don't have a calculator ?

So you read all 55 pages, 1,204 posts and didn't manage to find anything? Not even the posts by BMW employees confirming these numbers? I think you just have it set in your mind it isn't true and aren't willing to look at the facts - so let me help you with some simple math.

Like M3Adjuster said, M2's alone were about 1,000 cars. Now, let's add M3, M4, M4 vert, plus the 5 and 6 series cars.

To be REALLY conservative, let's assume only 2,500 of each of those (way off based on proportional sales, but just to make the point).

1,000 M2 + 2,500 M3 + 2,500 M4/M4 vert + 2,500 5 series + 2,500 6 series = 11,000 cars

So yeah, the list is over 10,000 cars worldwide.

Wow. So you have to return the loaner within 3 hours of being notified that your car is done ? Seems a bit demanding!

Did you take it in for the break in service and the dealership offered to do rear differential recall at the same time? I thought dealerships were only reaching out to owners once they had replacement differentials available. Correct me if I'm wrong.

So was mine. Stuck at the Galveston port for a while and was only released once BMW lifted the hold. I signed the rear differential waiver at purchase. I'm waiting for the 1200 mile service to be completed as I write this. The SA made no mention of the recall. I ask him once the service is done.

So did they replace your rear differential during this service?

I checked my VIN against this site, and it said no open recalls for my MY16 M2.

Oddly, it also listed it as a 228i coupe - is this normal for M2 owners?
Sounds like you should be over at the 2addicts forum!
