Trying a staggered setup on my new 18x10" Apex's
After much thought I've decided to mount 265/35/18 Yoko A052's to the front and 295/35/18's in the rear on my 18x10's Apex's EC-7's.
I figure by the time I go thru those it will be May-June and other sizes will be out for the RE71R, BFG Rival 1.5 & the Yoko A052's. I decided not to run RE71R's as my daily tire on my 19 OEMs. I have a set on my 17 RF Miata and they are wicked LOUD! I'm hoping the Rivals will come out with more 19" sizes soon. That will end up being my daily tire and I then can go to my all time favorite R Compound the BFG R1. I'll report back after a few Solo 2's and a HPDE's....

Excellent choice, my friend. I posted the below in the Track section:
“I had a 19” track setup the last two years and ran Trofeo’s, Cup 2, R888R, RE-71R, and R7s, and am going back to 18s so I can run NT01, AR1, A052, Toyo RR, and Pirelli slicks. Crazy thing is going to the forged EC-7 18’s with A052’s will save 30lbs of rotational unsprung weight, vs my 19” VMR’s (1/2lb heavier per wheel than 19” EC-7) and RE-71Rs. That’s nothing to sneeze at!” And, it won’t be on my car, but we’re trying 295/30/18 & 315/30/18 A052’s on a friends tuned F80 M3 all day on an open track in a couple weeks. Should be nuts! PS. The wheel/tires I’m comparing for my setup are VMR 710FF 19x9.5 ET33 (with 3mm spacer) and 19x10.5 ET45 with 265/35/19 and 305/30/19 RE-71R’s, vs Apex Forged EC-7 18x10 ET25 and 18x10.5 ET40 with 265/35/18 and 295/35/18 A052’s. Four width size differences was too much for good balance, but 2-3 width difference has been good in my other staggered setups, so looking forward to 265/295 and 275/305s with the 18’s. I saw that post of yours....In fact, your posts on square vs staggered, and tire selection helped make my current decisions.
I've always steered away from a staggered setup. Ultimately these Four points shaped my final choices: 1) ESSEX BBK (Front axle) Allows for 18" tire selection, which still isn't optimum, but sufficient compared to 19's. 2) Un-sprung Weight-Rims, tires and BBK ( Really helps as you know) 3) Staggered is faster, especially at mid apex to track out with our cars. 4) Over time its cheaper as well :-) Consumables add up! Hope we meet up on a track soon. Appreciate you sharing your experience on the boards. That's what makes them great for decision making..

Awesome, couldn’t agree more.
Altho, I’m guessing some square folks will question your point #4, so you may want to jump ahead of them with your logic. In my experience, I always ended up with the same amount of tire life bn square & staggered by having a correct alignment and driving the car to each setup’s limits (not spinning up rears with square, not plowing fronts with staggered). The staggered sets usually cost a little more bc of the larger rear tire, but I found staggered more convenient bc I only had to keep track of moving tires from one side to the other, vs also front to rear. When I’m driving the car right, my front & rear staggered tires wear out surprisingly about the same time! |

You have the experience with staggered.
Wear is indeed in driving abilities, suspension setups and climate/track conditions. Nothing like a simple piece of chalk to mark my tires when running a square setup. Cross rotating after 40 minutes of track time then front to back same side for next event. IMHO you can squeeze a little more life out of squares if you manage your tires.... I'll soon find out. Looking fwd to the A052's...

Isn’t it a “no no” to run staggered tires on square rims? Apex told me this when I ordered my 9.5” EC7’s...
Also - how do you think the Yoko’s will drive compared to RE71’s? I love the RE’s and see no pressing reason to change, but I’m always tempted to purely to see the difference. |

Everything I've seen points to the 52's being faster.
I've never heard about different size tires being a problem on the same size rims. The 265's on a 10" rim are fine, the 295's are the max size allowed on a 10" rim. If I like the staggered concept I'll be buying a 18x11" for the rears

I wouldn't worry too much about 10" wheels with the different sized tires but would be ready for the difference in transient response since the relative sidewall spring rate of the front vs the rear is changed (i.e. fronts in this case have a higher sidewall spring rate relative to the rears versus say using 10" and 11" wheels). The rear could feel a bit sloppy in transient conditions, and it would be easier to use sharp steering inputs to break the rears loose, etc. We're talking very fine points here, but they exist nonetheless. I'm guessing it will work out fine.

Actually your spot on with that assessment.
The A052's have a much softer sidewall that the BFG's or RE71R's. So in the Solo 2 world, the posts have reported how sensitive rim width is with these tires and how camber sensitive they are as well I'm actually going to scrub them in at 1-2 auto x's before taking them on track. I've got a really good feeling about these tires and I'm almost positive I'll be adding a pair of EC-7's 18x11" ET44 by mid summer. I spent the last 4 months prepping the car for this season and now everything has been cancelled due to the Chinese Virus...
