M2 Competition discontinued mid 2021 ?

So i'm currently in a 230i lease and the plan was for me to get a new M2 Competition when my 3 year lease is up. That will be in late 2021. However, i keep hearing and seeing people say that the M2 Competition will be discontinued after this year.

Is this true? Will there be no 2022 model? I've seen so many conflicting news about it. Some people saying that the production will be moved to Mexico which is why people are saying "discontinued" to people saying that the M2 CS will take its place. The fact that i'm hearing that its discontinued is giving me pause and almost making me consider trying to get rid of my lease now just to jump in one before dealerships jack up the price. I was hoping for another year or two to save up a bigger down payment but i'm not sure. Some clarity would be amazing. Thanks for any info you can provide.

EDIT by Artemis:

There won't be a 2022 m2, atleast as we currently know them. The last year for both the competition and the CS is 2021. Moving forward well have G generation 2 series but details around that other than the m235 are scarce.

WoW, I think you're right, I was under the assumption that since the G87 M2 is supposedly scheduled to be released for the 2023 MY, there would be a 2022 M2C.

BMW tends to not have an M version of cars when they're first released. Typically they release first a base model/M performance version, then a proper M, then a comp, then a CS version. Pretty sure they just want to have something hotter coming out every year until the next refresh

The M series comes out a year after the new regular series is released. For the first year of release there is no M series cars.

As with the current 3 series, there currently is no M3 for 2020. The M2 came out in the third year of the 2 series production.

The M2 Competition goes out of production in June 2021. No model year 2022. Next-generation M2 not until 2023. So no M2 for about 18 months (end of 2021, 2022).

This might be biased but if the next-gen M2 is going to have the face of the new 2er GC, I'm glad I have the F87.

I'm not liking this design at ALL.

At least it has a semi decent front-end. It just needs a little Motorsport touch-up and it will look fine, unlike that BeaverMobile that is the next generation M4

The headlight design and overall......chunkiness of it is just meh to me. The back end of it is even worse, straight up X4 Coupe.

Hmmm, so basically if i want to have the current M2 Comp with the S55 engine i either have to buy the 2021 model (and possibly terminate my lease a bit soon) or i wait another year for 2023 and hope that the car looks as good if not better and has better performance for the same money.

I currently live in the San Francisco Bay Area in California so i'm not sure if that makes things different or not.

As people who have owned more BMW's than i have (my first is a 2020 230i i started leasing in 2019), would you guys recommend i wait, or get the 2021 M2 C. I know theres no news on the new 2 series however just based on your own previous experience with BMW, have you noticed a pretty big increase between M models? I know the Competition is a step up from the M2 and with this news i'm not sure if i should wait for the new M2 C which i assume would come out in...2025? I dont know if i want to wait till i'm 40 to jump into an M2 competition and i dont know enough about BMW to know if the wait would be worth it.

Well, I can tell you that having an M2C can make you feel better about being in your 40's. The thing makes me feel like a kid again here and there and I'm closer to the end of my 40's than the beginning of them, and I'm certainly not the oldest person on this board with an M2C. By far.

M Cars do tend to change somewhat significantly between generations. They get more powerful, and faster, and not always entirely better. Many folk around here love the M2C because it's closer to the E46 M3 experience than the current M3 (I never drove and E46 M3, so I don't count on this one). M Cars are about the experience more than they are the drag times. Mostly.

Near the end of the run, you might be able to do alright dropping your current lease for an M2C, or you will certainly be able to ride out your lease and then look at used M2C's.

You need someone with a crystal ball to answer that one (or at least a product planner at BMW ).

The next gen M2 will be based on the CLAR platform (like the current Z4 and Supra) and will likely get the same/similar engine (a B engine a not an S engine).

I also doubt the next M2 will get an S58 engine as the conditions for the M2C wont be around (M3/4 are in retirement anyways so sales weaken, ie less in house competition and the B58 is good for emissions for a while).

So I would say go test drive a Supra, if you like the way it drives then maybe its worth waiting for the new M2.

Styling is anyones guess but will likely mimic the new M3/4.

Edit: the Competition badge is usually just small tweaks, its only the M2C that got a whole "new" engine with the competition moniker. As far as I know BMW has only ever heavily revised an M engine for 3 M cars E34 M5 which had a 3.6L and 3.8L inline 6, E36 M3 which had a 3.0L and 3.2L inline 6 and now the comp with the N55 and S55 motors. So this is the exception rather than the rule.

G87 is at least three years away. What we know is production doesn’t begin until Dec of 2022. It will surely get a MT, but DCT will no longer be offered in the G87, it’ll get a ZF AT. We also don’t know if it’ll get a B58 or detuned S58.

You might be able to take advantage of a pull-ahead program. When you get within the last 3-6 months of your lease, there are times when companies like BMW will let you move into the new car without making you finish the original car's lease. At one time Porsche was running a program where you just had to be in the last year of your lease and they'd let you out of it.

There aren't usually pull ahead programs when you're already in an M, but you're in a 230i, so wouldn't have this same limitation.

Why not? I'm in my 40s and a long time BMW owner/driver and this is my first M. Timing is perfect, I have multiple cars and the M2 is the perfect drivers car for me. It is everything I want without spending $100k. I wouldn't have this as my only car (maybe an M5), but the M2 can serve as my daily driver or weekend car.

I guess you wait if you know what you are waiting for. In this case, sounds like you want the M2 so get the 2021 because there is no indication of the next one. Or the new M4 if you are worried about the M2 being obsolete.

Amen. My wife was shocked I was buying an M2 (and not a larger M more along my age ) when I told her. But the M2C is the best car purchase I have ever made. If they make the next ones as good as this, I may always have an M2 in my garage

IMHO, looking at the current X3/X4 M and M Comp should provide some insight to possible HP/TRQ numbers for the next gen M2/M2C but styling will be a total crap shoot might be great or might not. One thing I have learned is that even some styling changes that initially I did not like tend to grow on me, others not so much.

Best advice, see it, like it, buy it.

Thank you everyone for all the insight. Interesting that the new M2 might be based on the B engine rather than the newer S58.

The one comment about how the current M2C drives like the old E46 is really pushing me towards a 2021 model or a used 2020 model when times comes. I love the E46 and one of my friends has a fully track specced E46 which ive driven multiple times and am completley in love with. If i can get that kind of raw driving experience in a new car...my god that would be perfect.

I did actually get to test drive a Supra and its currently been the other car i've been considering. however i'm still leaning heavily towards the M2C largley due to it being more practical (my other car is an S2000, i cant really justify having two 2 seaters) and because i love the styling way more. Also the M2C just seems like a better daily.

A lot of people have been suggesting the M4, however i do plan on tracking the car i purchase and the M2 just seems to be the more fun track car. Plus ive just fallen in love with the 2 series platform and the 4 series have always felt a bit too big for me.

I appreciate everyone's opinion and i'm definitely leaning way more towards the 2021 Model or a used one. I hope BMW gives me a good deal on the end of my lease or at least a decent exception for a pull a head program as i'd be jumping all the way up to an M car.

Haha my quip about being in my 40's was less about the age and more i dont know if i want to wait another 5-7 years. I do agree with you though, right now the M2C ticks every single box i want ticked.

Looks good
Enough storage for a set of track wheels
4 seats
2-doors
400hp
Manual
Strong proven engine
50/50 weight distribution
Limited Slip Diff

I expect to keep this car for a long time if possible.

One word of advice as someone whose wife had a leased 228i before her M3 that we got a great lease deal on, if you want to get out of it, do it soon and when the negative equity you have in it is still reasonable to come out of pocket on or roll in to the M2C (or try to do a lease takeover and have someone else take it off your hands).

The reason I say this is, despite the amazing deal we got on it, she was virtually $5-14k under on that car the entire lease term (it was honestly cheaper to just hold on to the 228 and have 3 cars for 9 months then to try and trade it in or sell it). They lease well but the used market value on it is total shit.

If you don't carefully calculate this, you will be keeping that bloody thing until the very end of the lease because of the ever increasing hit you will take trying to get rid of it otherwise. Sooner the better (if negative equity is reasonable for you to cover). It sucks, but it's the name of the game.

EDIT: Also, my post in the above is objectively terrible financial advice. That being said, love for cars is not rational or logical, it's emotional. If you wanted to be rational and be financially sound, you'd drive a 7-10 year old Honda that's paid off. So take my above with a grain of salt and do what makes the most sense to you.
