This was pointed out to the dealer at the 1200 mile service.
Subsequently the dealer had the car for 6 days over several further visits and racked up almost 200 miles (!) trying to trace it's origin. It had a new shock absorber fitted prior to them identifying the diff as the potential problem.
Last week it was returned after a three week wait to have the new diff fitted.
When I went to collect it I was informed that the diff had been fitted, but unfortunately it was not a compatible fit with the propshaft!
Our car is now having the original diff re-fitted whilst a new one is ordered -again!
Still... We have the delights of a 218d whilst it's in the sick bay...
200 miles of testdrive? Wow. Service guys must have used your car for lunch runs all week

That's exactly what I thought and told the service manager who insisted that every mile was warranted in diagnosing the problem...

That wouldn't satisfy me.

I would find another dealer for my work.

If the mechanic can't figure out an issue after driving 15 miles one way and 15 miles back on a 30 minute test drive ..... then I'm probably at the wrong mechanic ..

That's about 7 test drives worth of mileage as far as I am concerned.

His was insistent saying that they required multiple test drives whilst trying to trace the source of the noise. I wasn't particularly happy and let him know, but the miles are on there now...

Very, especially for the diff. Make sure to do it properly, because replacements are hard to come by.

My car was an August build started 1st ended 18th and still has diff recall letter to sign. I guess every single 2017 sold in the US so far must have this issue?

I didn't get a diff recall letter to sign and nothing in the mail either. Is there somewhere else to check if I'm part of the recall?

No diff letter for me and I finished up my paperwork last week in prep for PCD. Build complete 09AUG.

Time will tell as even those who had no notice still have the crunch.

August build on mine and no paperwork for the diff at about 550 miles and just had some nasty crunch noise from the back. Is this a normal noise or is the bad diff noise?

Took delivery on my 8/29/2016 build M2 on Friday, 9/30. Got to witness the soda can crunch diff noise several times today. Started at 200 miles. Experienced it 4 more times over the next 25 miles. Sometimes sounds like something metallic dragging on the pavement for a split second.

Bummer.

My M2 came through with Continental ContiContact3 tires and NOT the Michelin PSS.

Double bummer.

Are they still building M2's with the faulty diff?

The metallic dragging thing could be a pebble getting between the heat shield for the brake rotor and the rotor itself and then dislodging soon after, it was a common complaint early on in the F80/82 days.

This is not that noise. It so loud and damage sounding that you get out of the car to look for parts on the ground. I didn't believe it until I heard it in mine.

It's simple people ... if your diff is making the 'soda can crunch' notify your dealer for warranty replacement. If it's not, then why worry? not every diff is duff.
