Are M2CS owners accepted into the M2 club???

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I've had two encounters with HS M2Cs. One is in my neighborhood. I threw up a wave and nothing in return. Today I was on my way to Asheville and passed an M2C. I made sure to slow down and give a thumbs up. Nothing. I'm a fan of the F8x platform in general, but surprised by the lack of love from M2 owners. The M3/M4 owners are as enthusiastic as myself and initiate and/or return the love.

What's your experience been like?

Honestly Dave.

The e30 m3 crowd is awesome. Most of my good friends own them or have owned them.

The e36 m crew not so much but I have a lightweight so in my own “space” anyway.

The m2 CS crew awesome. I’ve already made 2 lifelong friends. I’m not joking

But honestly after going to a major east coast bmw event. I have almost zero in common with most of the new Bmw sports car owners.

I would consider the ltw to e36 ownership very similar to m2 CS ownership to regular m2. 8/10 times we just won’t have much in common. Most are 25 years younger than I am. No kids. Income levels a lot different.

Now e30 m3 owners and e30’owners. Yeah we do get along. It’s strange but they are just different types of owners. And the e30 m3
is a giant hug. Everyone wants to approach it. It’s the true legend.

I’ll wave in my e30 m3. Chances are they will be flashing me anyway.

Same with ltw. They are giving me thumbs up etc. I don’t wave to e36 owners though. As for the m2 CS. Nope. I keep driving.

I can't imagine m2 or m2c owner giving you the thumbs up or a wave is their first thought. Look here on this forum. Many are saying it’s overpriced and just tune and some CF bits. They don't understand the car yet. Give it time thou. Maybe 10 years?

Interesting dynamic. I'll have to keep updating this thread if things change.

M2cs owners are the kings of the club as far as I'm concerned I would definitely wave.

I don’t think that there is an M2 club. Almost never see another M2 though I have a high volume dealer near me. They even got 6 M2CSs. I haven’t seen one on the road.

I see M3s/M4s all day long though. They never acknowledge me.

They normally just blow right by me farting every second they let off the throttle. No wave, just 100mph dash...

I was leaving the dealership in my m2cs and wasn’t even 2 miles into my journey and a m3 pulled up next to me gave me a rev and wave. It was an awesome way to kick it off!

I don't even bother going to car shows and meets in the north east. BMW has attracted a whole new breed of idiots (not all but most that I have met) in NY / NJ that lease M3 / M4s for $700 a month and it really brings down the brand. M2 is much rarer and there seem to be more

At the track it's a whole different story...

I guess I get too excited when I see an M2. From a distance you can tell that it's something unique long before identifying what it is. As you get closer you notice the with of the fenders. These cars have a really substantial road presence.

I'd you Dave, haha.

Actually I had two separate M2 interactions on the road last month. One had to honk me from the adjacent lane and the other rev'd (and burbled) to catch my attention. Both got my thumbs up, though, once I looked out and over.
I must come off as pretentious but honestly I'm still in the honeymoon phase so my focus is mostly in the drive and general isolation of the cockpit.

The car makes you feel like a fighter pilot once you're strapped in.

Anywho if you're ever in my neck of the woods feel free to honk, flash, rev, and throw a party if you see me. I'm the guy with the shit-eating grin. You're sure to get a wave from me.

Dave,

Don't think of it as a "CS" thing since as some have said it's simply the overall BMW ownership today. Even those who have purchased classic BMWs often are immune to enthusiastic greetings/encounters. My association with BMW started in 1972, and back then essentially everyone was an enthusiast of one sort or another, and if not they usually got sucked into the fold and convinced to join the CCA. It was simply not possible to meet another BMW on the road and not exchange headlight flashes. The majority of the cars were of course 2002s with an occasional 1600 with E3 sightings very rare (2500, 2800, Bavaria, 3.0S) and E9 (3.0 CS) sightings extremely rare.

A few years ago I came across a Malaga 2002 coming at me, and I flashed my headlights in appreciation only to have the owner look at me like I was an idiot as we slowly passed each other. I was driving my E39 M5 in shining LeMans blue, but I suppose the 02 dude figured I was up to something. A few days later I saw the car again, from behind, and SOB it was a 2002tii even. Over the following years when I would see the car again, I always flashed at it...never to be acknowledged.

Regards,
Chuck

I think this is more about people than the car. I dont think people will even notice the difference between an M2 and a CS when flying by each other at 50mph. I too hardly ever see an M2 of any kind where I am (very dense suburban area), but when I do, less than half will enthusiastically wave or acknowledge me, other half are too busy in their phone or hardly as passionate as I am about my M2.

The best was this SO M2C that gave respectful chase on a highway until I exited, at which time he gave me a nice smile and wave and went on his way.

The M2 CS is obvious to M2 owners when coming head on. The high forehead of the car makes the CF roof obvious as does the hood bulge and the CF mirror caps. Maybe they think it's a modified M2C ? Anyway, my point is those who know definitely know it's a CS from afar.

It sounds like my effort to not come across as a snob has me being overly enthusiastic . It's out of character for me to make gestures to other drivers so maybe I'll tone it down.

.... but I'm with you (even from Australia) there are some people who appreciate what the M2 CS is, and more importantly what it isn't.

and there are the few strange ones with some form of jealousy like as if it matters to me what they think or don't think of my CS

If you have it, love it, if you don't have it, don't dis it; that's called "being respectful"

You'll come across one or the other and you'll come across as one or the other regardless of what you do. I think that's just people in general.

Who can blame you when you're out enjoying your day in the car. If they don't wave back then, hey, on to the next one!

My introduction to the BMW world was an e30 driving BMWCCA instructor. This was in New England, and I really didn't know any other people with BMW's. That definitely shaped my impression of drivers of the brand at the time.

My first BMW was the 1M which obviously got lots of attention. I was literally invisible to drivers of cool cars in my X5. I am now having to get used to being noticed again in the CS which I am commuting in. I have missed a few waves while distracted and may have seemed snobbish to the driver waving. I usual try to reciprocate because we seem to be a dying breed.

I have also been snubbed by a local 2002 driver a coupe times, and I know he saw me (sorry, you may as well be in a display case in the cockpit of a 2002!!) so I have given up. He isn't cool. E30 drivers are definitely more cool.

I may have mentioned this, but M2C owners just pass without looking or waving and don't care at all. The only one who pulled up and noticed my car in my area was a GT3 Touring driver.

Great post. I could sub in my 2002 for every time you mention E30. It stops people in their tracks and no one feels weird about coming up and asking questions and taking pics. I get flashed by anyone and everyone from modern BMW's to minivans. And I always acknowledge. With the M2 I wave at other M2's but rarely get a wave. I get most attention from young guys in 235's and 240's who probably aspire to an M2.

I always wave and I think every encounter with a fellow M2 comp, they’ve waved back. OG M2s usually wave as well, but the one CS guy I waved to did not wave back

Granted it’s probably just him not noticing me on the other side of the street. I did have one OG guy actually make eye contact and then deliberately not wave/return my thumbs up, but most of them do.
