Front Tires Rubbing?
Hey all,
I'm running OEM wheels and they're some how rubbing on the fender lining. If anyone can shed some light on this I'd appreciate it greatly. I recently replaced my front right tire and noticed it rubbing majorly on the liner. My current setup is OEM wheels, 255/35 up front and 275/35 in back. Edit: Added 2 side profile shots of the wheels Last edited by Lyfe.In.A.M2; 07-15-2023 at 11:35 AM.. |

Can you take a pick of the entire front wheel from the side of the car.
Does the car feel like it drives ok? Without a busted control arm, or 20" wheel it would be hard to rub a stock tire. Wondering if something came loose on the fender liner and it's not in the right position? |

Have you owned this car since new? Wonder if ball joints or something could be worn and it isn't bad enough that it hasn't been unfixable via alignment. But I'd think a dealership would notice.

Looking more at the pics. The fender liner doesn't look melted like there is constant contact. Are the rubs happening when the wheels are turned to full lock? Do you have to turn hard anywhere that is combined with a bump or dip. Wonder if there is a certain situation where you are at full wheel lock and full compression of suspension?

I have never taken it in for an alignment because car isn't pulling to either side. I'm taking it today for an alignment to see if that fixes it. Bought the car used from a BMW Dealership and they didn't notice anything with the side. I could have someone look at the suspension but dealership didn't notice anything strange enough to mention.

Alignment was off, spot on now (They say) but still rubs if I go down a driveway and turn to the right half way. I've seen a thread about this being a common problem with m2s. Suspension is fine and no signs of damage. I don't know what to do now. The other option would be to go down to 245/35/19 now instead of 255/35/19.

Similar thread regarding winter tires in stock sizes rubbing:
https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1967218 As I hypothesized here, it must be due to the loose tolerances of the wheel liners from vehicle to vehicle. Your vehicle probably has wheel liners that are on the smaller side of that tolerance band, and with you running slightly oversized tires, the two conditions lead to some rubbing. If they were rubbing at stock sizes (245/35 R19), I would take it into the dealership to have them warrantied, so if you are able to throw on/have access to a set of 245s, I would check those first. If not, I have a feeling the dealership is going to give you a harder time since you are running non-standard sizes.

This is happening because of the slight increase in sidewall height going from a 245/35 to a 255/35. I have the same issue on my M2C as does everyone else who is running that tire size. I’m running Michelin PS4S tires.

I appreciate the knowledge. My extent of knowledge with tires is minimal, hence why I'm posting this thread. I appreciate it.
